I have someone in Canada I will need to send a pen/pencil in a box, around how much is shipping?
It depends on whether it is shipped 1st class or priority mail. Priority mail SFRB sent from the post office is about $25 but gives you door to door tracking. First class it will depend on the weight About $10 is about right up to 8 0unces - over that it jumps to over $15 in one fell swoop. Tracking isn't as good and Canadian postal service is not the greatest, particularly if it is going to the hinter lands. FedEx and UPS are probably both higher priced.Check the US Post Office sight. It hould be under $10.
Just to Clarify -- the shipper never pays the duty or taxes they are paid by the recipient.Never use Fedex or UPS to ship anything to Canada, if you do, it'll cost you more than twice as much as using USPS. Plus your guaranteed to have to pay duty if you choose either of them, and normally you won't if you use USPS.

Good advice for all shipping regardless of carrier or destinationThe only comment I can make is for the shipments safety, use a really good tape on all seams of the package. I have had flat rate boxes opened with contents removed then thrown into a bag saying it was "damaged in transit" but have never had problems with a well taped package.
