This tree hasn't been around a long time, but it was a gift to my biological mother and her husband when they moved into their current home. We've called it the "Sibling Tree" as it was gifted to them from myself and my 2 sisters. (Yes, there is a great, but long story about the adoption and reunion). Anyway, what was a bottlebrush bush ended up being a bottlebrush tree. They were concerned about the roots since it was right next to the line to the septic tank, so they took it down. A couple years of drying and these are the resulting pens for the family to pick from. We're heading down to visit them next week.

It's not particularly pretty wood, but definitely has sentimental value. There were some interesting, but subtle shades of orange, red, and brown. The pieces with any figuring or visual interest from the main crotch were not meant to be without hybridizing them, which I don't have the means to do yet.

FYI: bottlebrush tree is stinky if there is much moisture in it. Also, it's pretty hard and takes a very long time to dry.

Those will be keepsakes forever. GOOD JOB!

I got into pen turning because my neighbor cut down the tree in their back yard. This was the tree that was "home base", "tree fort", or picnic spot. I made him three "rounds" of the trunk with photos of the kids playing under the tree. After a bit he asked me to make something the children could use on a daily basis. I made him three pen, pencil and desk sets from the tree wood.

In hindsight, I should have put individual photos of the rings when the children were born.

Awesome! My father n law passed and was a concrete finisher and I asked my brother n law to get me one of his tools with a long wood handle to make them some pens. I made them the pens and now they will think of their dad everytime they write with them pens.

Your family will appreciate the gifts, mine did.
