Ornate Pearl Lignum Vitae

I thought I had posted this, but can't find the post. This is an Ornate Pearl pen in bronze from Crooked Mill. The wood is lignum vitae. I think they go well together.

Here's something you might find interesting, Jim. During WWII Lignum Vitae was turned to make bearings on board U.S. Navy ships. My father in law told me that (he was a Carpenters Mate on board the Crosley) and showed me a bearing he made and kept for himself. The oils in it made it a natural lubricating bearing. It's one of just a few woods that actually doesn't float in water.

I knew about the bearings/bushings on Navy ships and submarines in WW2. My dad was a WW2 navy vet, and when I was a kid he had a chunk of lignum vitae he used to show me and tell me about. God how I miss him...

But I didn't know it won't float I'm going to try it!

I believe it's also the hardest wood on the planet. I have not worked with the true Lignum Vitae, but I do like the Argentine. It smells amazing. Is the true stuff aromatic, too?

I've only ever turned the Argentine variety.
