I was at my local woodworking store and was looking at a new Nove lathe offering. I'm not looking to buy a new lathe, but if I were this one might be a contender. It has a direct drive motor, no pulleys, no belts. Has anyone else seen it? Pricey for a midi at $1500.00.

I'm 100% happy with my Nova 1624-44 with the DVR replacement motor (in place of the original one-speed). It still has the pulleys and belt, but I don't ever change them since I got the digital speed control of the DVR motor.

Nova guy here as well - own a DVR XP and a Comet 2 and have no reason to look for anything else. The Comet replaced a worn out Delta midi that I had prior. After owning a fully speed adjustable lathe that only requires a twist of the controller knob vs moving belts and stuff around, I can tell you variable speed is a must! I have used Technatools support services for the DVR and they were top notch as well, so I would definitely consider their products for any of your needs. My turning clubs use Jet's and Rikon's and both are good products as well, just not a fan of the required belt changes.

My jet has three pulley's and a variable speed knob. I have it set to the highest speed pulley and use the knob of I need to turn it down. I always turn small pen blanks as fast as the lathe will go, so it pretty much stays at 5 on the dial. When I need to sand, I turn the dial down to two or so.
My jet 1221 is probably 110 pounds or so. The comet 2 may have been 50 or 60. There was a noticable difference in vibration dampening with the jet over the comet. Overall build quality was superior on the jet too.

In all honesty, the jet will likely get delegated to a dedicated buffing machine.

I actually prefer turning on my OneWay 1224 and VicMarc vl150. They are superior in everyway to the jet.

Eventually, I'll get my one-way 2436 setup for bigger stuff.

I am not a nova fan at all and I recommend to everyone to avoid them.

Ken, I just bought the Nova Neptune and took delivery a couple of weeks ago, but have not put it together yet due to other priorities. I do have their larger Nova Galaxi DVR lathe, for about 6 years now, and have had no issues. I also have had their Voyager DVR drill press for about 6 years as well. Both units have been perfect with no issues. I love the DVR motor as its very quiet and of course you have no belts to change for speed selection or wear. Given this, I couldn't help myself when I had some extra money burning a hole in my pocket back before Christmas and took advantage of a slight discount of $100 and took the plunge to get the Neptune...

Keep us posted on how you like it. I probably will never buy another lathe. I have a Laguna and Jet. I just saw the Neptune and liked what I saw.
