Welcome from Louisiana. PM me an address and I will be happy to ship out a box of pen blanks and some Euro kits that I am never going to use. I might have some other things to fill the box with too.
FYI I was a Sailor and a Soldier in the 70s and 80s. DAV now. We gotta stick together brother cause we are all on the same side.
As a teacher, I can tell you that I'd be quite happy if she turned in that bowl.
I don't think she needs to learn to turn everything in the world - it's more of a 'learn how to do something on your own, and show what you learned' idea. I would be very surprised if your school expects you to purchase/procure that much.... Sure some will go overboard, but you should find out what the core of the assignment is before you go any further.
Being pass/fail, have you spoken with her teacher to see what the success criteria is for this assignment? Perhaps if she just learned to turn a few things, using items you already have, you'd be in a much more feasible situation?
Retired from pen and woodturning, but the first thing you must do for your sister would be to purchase a book on woodturning fundamentals. Usually about $20. It is a learning and teaching book, of which there are at least two. The two of you need to learn fundamentals and safety BEFORE the accident, not after. Then you will be ready to start spending lots of money on tools and kits, preferably through Vendors here on IAP, since they can be trusted to have good prices and guarantees. Welcome from Fort Pierce, Fl.

I was a mentor last year on a senior project on maple sugaring. Over 10k was spent, i got alot of donations from alot of companies for the project so it was only 3k out of pocket for the family.
I have to talk to them in a week or two to turn in her hours. It will be the same as the one i did last year. But i will double check..
I agree with you on not turning everything in the world. I told her to pick three or four things to do. Bowl, natural edge bowl, pen and bottle stopper. The other night after her interweb search she wanted me to get stuff to make blanks, i about fell over. No was the answer.
The schools tells them to ask for donations. But will not give them any official leter head or anything. I am not so sure why. Last year a kid built an all concrete hot tub, formed it up, plumb it upn and had a concrete company donate two truck loads of crete to his project. It was a built in permanent structure at his parents house. Free, totally free. Got all plumbing, forms, wiring, and crete free, all donations.

Wow, that's pretty cool. Around here even the small batch mixers are 5 cu. yd, so a couple truckloads is a lot of mud!
It's a shame that the school won't give them some kind of documentation. I know that here in Cleveland, the kids can show some kind of authorization on school letterhead even to sell me a candy bar. I bet they'd get a lot more donations with the school officially backing them up!
USMCCpl;1815392 So far wife and I have purchased her a Lathe said:I'm curious why after spending $2,000 for a wonderful woodturning shop (that many would dream of) for one High School Project, the pen kits/blanks, etc is such a challenge?
If you PM me your address I'll supply 10 kits/bushings/unique blanks, for the info of the school district/class and project.
Oh... What happens to the shop after she graduates???

Well if she does not use it, it will most likely sit in my basement and rust. Or i may sell it to try to get back some money. Or if i can find the spare time i might try my hand at it myself.
I just ordered her a number of starter kits from different company's so she will be all set on them now. Guess it is easier to spend the money then ask for help. Just takes time to make the money to spend it.

Page 5 of the School District Senior Project Manual indicates that ... "Many good projects require little or no cost..." My quote may be slightly a bit off... feel free to correct

Or you could donate the equipment to the Industrial Arts Department at the school. I'm sure the teacher would love the equipment as elective courses across our country have taken a hit due to budget cuts. It would be a tax deduction as well. Here is the teacher's contact information: Mr. Gosselin's email: jgosselin@sunapeeschools.org
Well my sister-in-law sent me a text and said she signed up for the site. She said she will not mention her name but she is going to tell the truth about her big brother. I told her not to worry about it and I would take care of the problem.
My sister-in-law graduated high school in 2012. She is currently in college, she is going to further educate herself to become a fish and game officer. She recently came to me with an interest is the woodturning. So we bought her a lathe. She turned a bowl, then another one, then a mug and again another one. She attended a class in vermont for a day. She spends most of her time at the turning tent at the craftsmans fair. She wanted to do more than just turn firewood that i would bring home from work. We bought her some stuff at woodcraft. She needed more. So i took it upon myself to do what i did in 2012 for her senior project in maple sugaring, i had permission from the school to solicit for donations in 2012 for her senior project. Seeing how i am helping her cousin in another school district in the state with his senior project on photography. I figured why not set her up with another senior project and get her some extra stuff for her hobby. So thats what i did. I figured this time I will tell the truth instead of her coming in her to bail her big brother out of the mess he got himself into. Anyway i was just trying to help her out in her hobby of woodturning and went about it the wrong way. She blames that on my mental issues. Maybe thats why my wife and I are going to counseling. Who knows.
I apologize to all of you for causing any harm! I ws just trying to help out my sister-in-law. I understand if you remove me from the community. Please allow her to remain if she did sign up.
Thank you all for your time.

Chuck is correct. We've been scammed.
The users USMCCpl and VJHM were created from and accessed the site from the same IP address, both a fixed and a mobile device. Before I let him know I knew this, VJHM told me that they do not live together.
I already sent him 2 of my $20 Craft Supply Gift Certificates and have a box ready to mail. Glad I didn't go to the post office yet.
I guess I'm too trusting like many others here.
I was just trying to get some stuff to turn on my lathe. I got the idea cause i did the same thing when my sister-in-law did her senior project on maple sugaring in 2012. So i figured i could get some stuff to turn on my lathe by saying my sister-in-law was doing another senior project.
