It's time to replace my benchtop Delta DP350 and get a full size drill press. I got a 20% off deal on a Steel City 20520 17" Drill Press. It isn't my first choice which was the Delta 20" 20-950... but you can't get one as they halted production. So I think the Steel City is about the best I can get for a reasonable price right now.

The 6" stroke with very low runout is what I want. The other features of the machine pretty much sealed the deal once they sliced 20% off the price tag!! So I locked down the deal and I am picking it up this weekend if not sooner.

Oh... THEY are Woodcraft in West Seneca NY. They have one more SC floor model on sale at 20% off, if anyone is interested. Just tell them Bree sent you!

I believe that Steel City DP is the same as my Craftsman 17" model. If it is, you will really love it, it's a great tool. Good luck.

Just for grins and giggles, drop by your local HD and look at the 15 inch Ridgid Drill Press. I bought this press in a hurry, because my Delta decided to die at the worst possible time, which was right in the middle of the biggest pen order that I ever had.

I took it home, it set up out of the box in about 1 hour and I have used it hard ever since. The price is $299 and RIGHT NOW THROUGH TOMORROW, HD will give HD Credit Card purchasers a 10% discount AND 12 MONTHS same as cash.

This press has a quil travel of 3 3/4 inches and has served me well enough NOT to to pile down a BIG pile of cash on a 17 inch model. In fact, I have really grown to love this press.

I have the Steel City DP and love it. I bought it when they first came out with it and I use it a lot. You wont be sorry you bought it for sure. That 6" travel it great. :good::good::good:

I was one of the lucky ones that got a 20-950. If the Steel City is anything like my Delta, you will be very pleased.

I tried to get the Delta 20-950. I scoured the Net. I asked my Rockler guy to get me one by hook or by crook. No luck.

I want the long quill stroke. That is important to me. I wish I had variable speed but I can live with a 3 pulley belt drive. I don;t change speeds very often anyhoo.

So guys... what is WRONG with this drill press. Some of you had problems with other tools... but what is bad about THIS tool? I can still walk away from this deal. I trust you guys more than I trust vendors.

Well as even the naysayers thought... I did buy the drill press. It's 251 pounds shipped weight and we lugged it into the house and down to the shop. Just barely squeezed it through the doors.

It was well packed and all the parts were there and in good condition. The documentation was good and it was easy to assemble except for the sheer weight of it. We had to have one of our man-mountain friends come over to help mate the head to the column.

But it's together and I tested the runout on the quill and the bit. It tested out at .002" on both... Not bad. It is well within my needs and parameters. Have to go to a meeting tonight so I will probably do some drilling tomorrow. I'll take a few PICs too for the NON-BELIEVERS.

Well here she is. I drilled several blanks and got good holes with no drift from the perpendicular. I had to give the taper a couple of whacks to get it seated. Once it was seated it drilled with ease. It sits lower than my Delta which sat on a stand. So it takes a little getting used to. So far I like it a lot. We'll see if the guys who don't like Steel City are right. I just couldn't pass up that 6" throw.
