Has anyone ever had a dump cake?

Our neighbors (the one that let me use his lathe) brought us two different kinds of dump cakes. One was like a peach cobbler and the other was like a chocolate covered cherry with nuts. They were delicious! And still warm from the oven. The only thing that could have made any improvement... a scoop of ice cream.

I would like to find out how to make these. I'll have to see if they will share their recipe.

Never heard of it over here in the UK. But I've just googled it and there are quite a few delicious sounding ones out there. Wouldn't mind trying some myself.

We had 10 year old boys in Scouts making them in a dutch oven on camping trips (Weblos).

Not hard to do and kids of all ages love them.

Well... I took the advice of everyone and did a google search. I did exactly as the directions said and I have dry cake mix on the top.
I dumped in the pie filling, dumped in the cake mix and spread it evenly, then sliced up a stick of butter and placed it randomly across the top.

This looks nothing like what was given to us. I'm a little disappointed.
I'm not a baker and I guess I should leave baking to the professionals. Or at least our neighbor.

If in doubt use another stick of butter or slice the first stick into twice as many pieces. The two stick version is much more rich and diserves vanilla ice cream.

I like the way you think. Everything is better with butter, or bacon.

I actually sliced the butter into thin slices and it covered most of the surface.
I found two other suggestions that I might try.
Add a can of pineapple or stir the cake mix into the pie filling. I don't know how I feel about pineapple though.

If the dry cake mix is too dry, the boys added half a cup of water with melted butter in a zip lock bag with the cake mix then kneaded in the bag to mix, and sqeezed the mixture onto the fruit.

Cherry pie filling chocolate cake mix, and a bag of chocolate chips was the favorite

The ice cream needs to be BLUE BELL home made vanilla.
It tastes just like what we used to get from the home made ice cream machine that you
sat and turned.... YUMMMMMMMM!!

We are going to a Christmas party tonight with friends.
Guess what we are taking??? DUMP CAKE!

Thanks for the idea!

I hope yours turns out better than mine.

After it has set over night, the dry spots absorbed some of the moisture, but still has dry cake mix on the surface. It also has some spots that are a little hard. This isn't anything like we had from our neighbor. Theirs was moist and delicious.
I've looked at many, many recipes, and they are all basically the same. I followed the most common one, and it didn't turn out. It truly was a "dump" cake, I'll probably end up dumping it in the garbage.
I don't believe I will attempt another one.

Well, since my dump cake didn't turn out, and I still had the stuff to make another one, I decided to make it differently.

I made the cake mix as per the instructions (except we didn't have the veggie oil, so I found that butter can be substituted) and poured the pie filling between two layers of batter.
It's not the dump cake that started me on this quest, but it turned out delicious. Very moist and has a nice fruit layer.

It's not like cake, and it's definitely not like my dump cake.
I will actually eat this one.

Now it's out to have some left-over ham and home-made mac and cheese.

Cabot Cheddar receipe by any chance? My go-to and kids favorite.

I don't believe so. It's a family recipe from my wife's grandmother that my wife has put her own twist on.

It has two kinds of cheddar and some baby swiss. The cheese comes from an Amish cheese factory about 20 minutes from us.
My wife also uses a ricotta and parmesan cheese, black olive, onion, and sausage mixture to stuff large shells and bakes it in a home-made cheese sauce with a thin layer of freshly made marinara on top along with fresh mozzarella. This disappears every time it's made, so I don't get left-overs from that.

There are hundreds of ways to make dump cakes. In a dutch oven, in scouts, we used the same style recipe KenV gave you, and a variation that used Coke, Sprite, or even root beer. (makes the cake much fluffier because of the carbonation. This would be what KenV is talking about when adding water. Bleah. Try the soda. Colas for dark cakes, "Uncolas" for light colored cakes)

Also, if you are ending up with dry cake mix on the top, cover your cake pan with foil, (seals in the steam) for about 60-75% of the cooking time. Then, remove the foil WITHOUT removing the cake from the oven. Be VERY careful of the heat elements in the oven. DAMHIKT! This should force the juices from your filling throughout the mix.

My wife bought Cathy Mitchell's Quick & Easy Dump Cakes cookbook and we have had a blast trying all of them.

So many variations, it would be very hard to know, without asking, exactly how your friends made the ones they gave you. Experiment, and you may be pleasantly surprised, or, possibly not. ;)

Only way to tell is to try.

Any chance of a recipe being posted, or would you have to kill us if you told us?!

Those shells sound yummy!
