This is a new thing for me. A friend gave me a box of cigar labels so you will see more eventually, but this was the first. The label makes it a perfect anniversary gift for someone who enjoys cigars. I think I need to practice a bit with placing them to get the ends of the band to match up, though I forced this one to work pretty well. The pen is a monarch from Turner's Warehouse and the wood is Granadillo, so there's a little chatoyance (which, of course, you cannot see in the pictures). I left the finish au natural after losing count of how many layers of medium Glu-Boost I used, with a couple additional layers of thin over it. It leaves a nice tactile finish. I really didn't feel like putting that much CA on and then evening it out, and I rather like the feel of it as it is.

That is really Cool! Fantastic choice of wood and kit! - I really like the plated finish and you are right, it's hard to capture the chatoyancy in pictures. I'll bet it is simply stunning in person. - Dave
 
Really nice pen, Todd. I like the use of Granadillo - very 'cigar-like'. For the labels, what I do is dry-fit the entire label and then cut one end to ensure a tight fit. I wrap the cut end under the other to give it a finished look. I use 3M Super 77 to adhere the label to the wood.

I've not done one like this before. Did you turn and finish the wood first, then CA/GluBoost from there?

That's basically what I did, but I used CA to glue the label on. I quickly learned that that is not a great way to affix it, so thanks for the tip. I'm glad that I started with a basic label rather than some of the really cool ones. Also, Granadillo is one of my favorite woods in general.

Yes, that's exactly how I did it. So, the "under layer" of CA was polished, but the CA I put on after the label was glued on is just dried as is. I guess it looks more like a tobacco leaf when it's not perfectly smooth and flat. (That's how I'm justifying my laziness anyway ;) )

A funny thing about that... I made this for a Monarch Grande, but overturned the blank. I ended up just finishing it up and then ordering a regular sized Monarch with the next order to put it on because I wanted it on that exact plating.
