Greetings from Nebraska - This afternoon and evening I turned a new wood for me, Black and White Ebony from Laos and it was a troublesome turn. The wood seemed extremely hard, perhaps normal, but as I was turning the lower blank I had a bad catch that threw a big chunk of wood. Fortunately it only went down to the bushing diameter and no smaller so I was able to recover. Then as I turned the upper blank when I started getting close to the right diameter I noticed some kind of crack or void start to appear. It worsened the deeper I turned. Fortunately I have some Ebony colored "Timber Mate" wood filler that I was able to use to patch it up before final sanding (800 grit). After finishing it virtually disappeared. (I love that Timber Mate wood filler. It doesn't shrink and when thinned down with water it makes an outstanding grain filler. It is made in Australia but there is a USA distributor).
Anyhow, I paired it with a Berea Cigar kit in Satin Black. In spite of all of the troubles I think it made a pretty attractive pen.
