My family liked the pen that made it to the front page they asked me to make them some.

Liberty with black alder and black/red/black veneer. Purple dyed maple (I think) with the same veneer.

Ken, you are in part responsible for my need to make more of these. I think it would be fun to make the 8 sided one you've shown, but I have no doubt it would require me to make a bunch of them. 6 kids, four in-laws and a dozen grands...
They are fun. At the moment I'm trying my hand at a 6 sided one.

I was trying to imagine doing a five sided one...I bet the knot would look strange.

I do have what I hope will be an interesting variation that I am working on. I hope to get it done this week.

I would like to see that, 5 sided. I might have to model it and see what appears.

Looking forward to seeing your variation.

Nice job Steve. I have one in mind for when I get back in the shop this winter and start making pens for awhile again. I like the basic Knot like your best because it shows great detail when you start doing multiples they get run onto each other and yes it is a different look but to me too busy. With that said I probably will try one or two just to say I did one. :) Just another cross it off the bucket list thing. Just so many things I want to try before I pass on and I know that time is getting shorter with each day that goes by. Thanks for showing and I am sure they will make nice gifts.

I was in Klingspor Monday and looking at veneer. Damn is the price of that either gone up or they are overpriced. The jury is still out on that one.
Depends on what you are calling veneer. In the pen turning world you are going to have to be more specific as to what you ask and what you talk about because we are not so called woodworkers building furniture and our canvas is so small. Please look in the library and read through some of the tons of info and list of vendors for various pen kits, segmenting materials, blank making materials because it runs the gamut and there are many options. What one uses is not the be all do all. Take a board and slice it down into thin strip is veneers that cost peanuts but you are after colors and wood does not give you that unless you are using woods that absorb stains well and aspen and soft maple are a couple of those. Just points I am trying to make.

I totally understand that. My comment is on traditional rotary cut veneer available at your local woodwork store. I have been looking at many different materials to use as veneers for pens, but traditional furniture veneer is one of those options.

Are you talking wrapping a pen tube with veneer?? If so may I suggest do not do it. If using as segmenting you do not see the edge of a veneer when used like that.
