This is a new kit for me. It's a Wingman from Turner's Warehouse. This is similar in size to a cigar pen. I like that I could knock the finial out (see warning below) and make my own. It's pretty obvious that this one is Olive wood, courtesy of a Home Goods cutting board.

*Tech notes
  • I have no clue what diameter bushings the upper barrel takes, but I didn't have any that fit it, so I just put the brass tube between centers and carved carefully. (I almost never buy bushings any more, but just use whatever fits in the tubes to turn down close to finished size and then go TBC with calipers to finish the job. It's one less thing to lose, right?)

  • There is a "sleeve" inside the upper assembly, as seen in the first 2 pictures, that slides over the transmission.
    • There is a lip in that sleeve.
    • If you use a transfer punch to knock out the finial, make sure you have a small enough diameter to clear the lip or you will destroy it like I did.
    • The gold one in the other pictures is the one I trashed. (Stay tuned to see if that one turns out OK after the JB Weld patch)

Here it is "glued" back together?
I had to file out some shredded metal before doing this. I do love my Dremel. Wish me luck with that one.

Beautiful blanks and final pen - well done. Not a critique fof your work, but I find the gap in the centerband unappealing; I would be trying to push it closed all the time. The remainder of the kit looks nice, and I love your process for not using bushings. 👍

Thanks. I don't disagree about the gap. It reminds me of the little space between the top and bottom of the slimlines that you just can't quite get to close all the way. It does leave the option of some inlay material, though. Hmm, I have some nice blue apetite that would make a great contrast there.

Is the gap where the twist occurs? Wondering if it would be possible to turn a custom wood (or resin, if the barrels are made of resin) band to fit into that gap? Seems like one of those "customize it" opportunities, at least assuming you can in fact fit anything into said gap.

The gap is in the center band. The twist is below there.
