I believe I have all the entries up here but I am human and a mistake can happen.

Pen #1

A pen from an 11 yograndson.



"The segmented blankwas one that had been received for participating in a previous 13 and UnderContest.. He chose the Majestic Squire kit to use with the blank. He sanded the blank to 400 and then applied acoat of Yorkshire Grit and 4 coats of Hampshire Sheen.

My Grandson did all ofthe work on this pen. My involvement was to give him direction andoccasionally demonstrate a cut." (quote from Grandfather)

Pen #2


From and 8 yo lady and her new pen.

"I picked the pen andcolor out of his pen catalog, and my Dad ordered it for me.

I cut the magenta icewith a saw to fit the pen. My Dad put it in the drill and I pulled thehandle to make a hole and then mixed glue and then put the glue on the goldtube and put them together.



We waited until the nextday, and then I used the sander machine to make sure the ends were flat.

My Dad helped me put inon the lathe and I made it round and smooth. This is fun because it makesa mess.


My Dad attached a cutterthat put the flat spots and twist on the body. I wanted a twist becauseit's a twist pen.



I sanded and sanded andsanded until all the marks were gone. Then my Dad sanded some more andshowed me how to make it shine.
We used some white stufffrom a bottle to give it a super shine. It's so shiny.

My Dad showed me how toput the parts together and make the pen work. I twisted the screw andmade sure there were no spaces.

And then I testedit! It works, I showed my Mom and she loves it, I think she is jealous,so I told her I would make her one too but in purple or blue because they areher favorite colors."

Pen #3


From a 12 yo lady. Parents comments

"She picked out theblank and a Europena pen kit. I set up most everything but she did allthe work. She drilled the blank on the lahte and we painted the tube blue and Iglued it in. She used the barrel trimmer on the drill press. I mounted on thelathe and turned off the sharp edges. She then turned and sanded with mysupervision and guidance."

Pen #4

From a very young man, age 7 (Grandpa's comments)



He chose the kit and blank. Hecut the blank on the band saw, drilled the blank on the lathe, and milled theends. i glued the tube in.
I guided His hands as he turned the pen. He did all of the sanding and applied a coat of Yorkshire Grit andthree coats of Hampshire Sheen.
I held the pen and finial in the penpress as my grandson pressed it together.

Pen #5


From a 13 yo. young lady.

She helped me mix and pour this blank with alumilite. She actually mixed all the colorsand poured into one cup for a flip cup. She picked out the Sierra Grip pen. Iset up most everything but she did all the work. She drilled the blank and wepainted the tube white and I glued it in. She used barrel trimmer on the drillpress. I mounted on the lathe and turned round. she then turned and sanded withmy supervision and guidance.

Pen #6


From a gentleman of 12....Granddad's comments.

This is a Shock Absorber kit that mygrandson has had since participating in the 13 and Under contest a couple ofyears ago. He chose to pair it with a piece of Bocote from Pop'sstash. After sanding, one coat of Yorkshire Grit and four coats ofHampshire Sheen were applied.
He did all of the work on this penwith the exception of one band saw cut that would have put his fingers a littlecloser to the blade than I was comfortable with.

Pen #7
From a young man of 10 yo (Dad's comments)

My 10 year old son and I spent mostof a day in the shop making this pen. It is a Sierra kit with a segmentedblank that we constructed out of pieces of "Lava Lamp" blanks. He came up with the design, and helped to glue the blank together. I cutthe pieces on the bandsaw. He did the drilling (with guidance), and thenturned the blank. He then sanded the pen up to 12000 grit, and finishedit with a bit of plastic polish. We almost didn't make it; as he wasturning the pen, he a had a catch and broke three pieces off the tube. Wewere able to find the pieces and glue them back together and finish thepen. Such is life when segmenting! This was a very enjoyableexperience for me, as we got to spend a good bit of time together in the shop;there was a lot of laughter, barking spiders, gluing of fingers, and I kepthearing "this is fun" over and over.

I am at my desk at work, realizing I have not been at the lathe since before Christmas. Work, and stuff around the house has kept me and the family busy. So I checked out the pens and for whatever reason I thought it was pick 3, so I clicked 3 and voted then realized it was only 1. My bad, however I think you could go 1-7 and vote without looking and you could argue you picked a great pen anyways.
