Here it is Members. The contest for the youngest turners of the IAP.​

We are going to have one round of voting unless there is a tie.
Then there could be a runoff round.​

We ask you to vote for one pen only.
We know they are all winners but we only have one 1st place prize.​

We are going to have 96 hours of voting. (YUP......4 days)
That allows everyone enough time to look, think and vote.
The winner (or runoff poll) will be posted on Saturday.

Pen #1.....This pen is by a 9yo boy Who did all the work himself. The adult who watch over him held his hands during the cutting on the band saw. Measured with the Calipers till the young man decided it was close enough. Adult helped with assembly by holding the parts straight. The youth did all the turning, sanding, polishing and decission making with this pen.

Pen #2.......Is by an 8 yo granddaughter. It is polyclay. She picked the colors, rolled out the sheet and placed around Compson tube.
She then did the shaping to fit the components. After baking, she put on the gloss finish.
Grandfather helped with the trimming and holding for assembly.

Pen #3 .......Is by a Purple Cigar pen completed by a 9yo. Everything was done by the youth except the glueing of the tubes and the repair of a small chip.
The Dad gave lots of advice and stood by incase of trouble.

Pen #4 ..... Was completed by a 12yo boy. After picking out the Cigar pen kit and Mesquite Burl blank......This young man completed everything.
He applied and buffed the CA finish himself.
Dad helped with a little bark on the blank and with assembly (and some advice)

Pen #5 Is from a 12 yo young man. He created the pen blank from scratch making all the cuts and gluing all the segments. He came up with the design and colors on his own. Pen kit is Sieara Vista two tone black chrome. He drilled it, glued the tube, sanded the ends and the corners off. After turning down to the bushings, he sanded to 800. He applied 8 coats of medium ca. After applying the ca, he sanded 320 to 800 and then wet sanded to 12000. He than applied Novus 2 and finished on the buffing wheel. Finally he assembled the pen. The only hands on assistance I gave was I guided his hands a few times until he got use to the transition of the different materials, Alumilite to accent strips. Other than that, all I did was mentor.

Pen #6 This is another 12yo Boy entry. He did all the drilling and glueing. Sized it to the bushing all by himself. He sanded to 800. He then wet sanded to 12000. He than applied Novus 2 and finished on the buffing wheel. Finally he assembled the pen. The kit is is a Majestic Squire.
He made this pen without any hands on from Dad.

Here lies the future of IAP, and it looks pretty bright! Due to the different ages within the group, I feel that a direct vote comparison is not something I will do. I want each of you young ones who entered to know I think, honestly, that each of you is #1 in this category. Congrats to each of you! :)

Will the mentor/dad/Gf please be sure my post is made known to your young pen turner. :biggrin:
 
Well from the looks of things we the IAP membership is in good hands. Hopefully these budding artisans keep the candle burning. Good to see. Job well done. They are all winners. Good luck to all.
 
Our hobby is in safe hands. Well done to all of the kids who entered their creations. I voted for #? Ha! Ha! you will have to wait and see, but you are all winners in my eyes.:biggrin:

I'll bet I spent 10 minutes studying each pen, trying to make a decision. They are all well done. I could have picked more than one.

Well done, kids. Stay with it and keep working to make your next pen the best pen you've ever made.

Yes, this one ends this morning and We will name the top three places.​

HOWEVER!
The Prize committee of the Minnesota Chapter of the IAP would like to announce the following.
We have decided to award every member of this contest a prize box.
The Top three will win the posted prizes.
All others will recieve a Small Flat Rate box of blanks as a way of saying.....
"Thank you for entering."​

Every pen entered is a winner. We are happy to sponsor the Youth contest
The skill these Kids show is a credit to their parents and grandparents.

All wonderful creations. This has inspired me to get my ten year old out in the shop and see what she can do.
