Hey Mark,
Thanks, the blank was one she and I went to Woodcraft and she picked out. Her reason was she wanted to do a pen that wasn't all girly, and she thought more people would like it. WoodRiver - Acrylic Poly Resin Pen Blank - Black Spiral is the name of it. Some didn't seem to have as many white edges to it.
