It is warmer somewhere else. Here my exhaust is no where near freezing. I think we are at 6 degrees this morning. think I'll go dig out my swimming suit.

It's around 10 degrees here right now but the wind chill has it down below negative. The weird thing is, is that around Christmas it is supposed to be in the forties and raining, lol.

It can get so cold that your heater intake will clog, choking off the furnace.

If this happens, then create a "T" in the PVC somewhere in the house (mine is next to the furnace), and cap it.

Then in really cold weather, you can remove this cap to make sure that your are getting air intake that is warm.

This WILL however, make your furnace less efficient when the "T" is uncapped, but in my case, when it's super super cold, it's either that, or the furnace won't run.

So I uncap that "T" when the furnace gets choked in this weather.

This little tidbit could save your a service call from the HVAC guys.

So much for global warming. I wonder if Al will buy back my carbon credits. Looks like begining of a new Ice Age.

Jack

Don't you know? This cold weather is proof of global warming. It's true, I read it in the news.

Global warming doesn't mean higher temperature everyday (right away anyway). Look at the BIG picture like melting/receding glaciers.

It doesn't happen overnight and I am sorry that some people just can't see past their noses. Some stay too politically biased that anything that came from the other side cannot be true or right. SAD.

It's a might chilly here, too! But it's warmed up from yesterday. Yesterday it was -1, and today it's probably up to +5 or thereabouts! Shoot, I was able to go outside without my jacket about an hour ago - downright balmy! ;-)

Scott.

5 degrees and dropping. Blowing snow and hi winds all day. 35 car pile-up on the free way about 30 miles from here and they are closing roads all over. I may go to Florida this year yet. If I can get out.

and some people ask me if I miss BURR-Naska (Nebraska)
Only one of the few places where I know it snows from East to West, not falling from the sky.

Temp. still dropping, 0 now and still blowing. The 35 car pile-up has been upgraded to over 100 cars and semi's, with one person dead and still sorting it out. Not a good day.

Yes, it is sad when people let their political bias get in the way of seeing ALL the facts. I just happen to believe the facts and not the "global warming" profiteers.

Wind Chill is negative 16 degrees right now and falling. The wind is just wicked out there. It just about slammed the rear hatch on my minivan on me.

Sho glad it's not cold here, yet. Around 67 deg. today. Started cooling off at sundown. Even had the Great Grandson [be 1 year old tomorrow] out. Just learning to walk pretty steady. He walked to the shop [about 135ft.] then back again & played in a pile of pea gravel for about 30 min. Nice day for him, & me. But may-may- see some light rain in the next day or two.

Yes, SAD indeed that there are some who think that they're seeing the BIG picture but are really only seeing just a little tiny bit in front of their noses.

Fact: Climate change is cyclical - always has been, always will be. Furthermore, IF we are indeed causing global warming (and, FWIW, I do believe that we are currently accelerating the process), Mother Nature will take care of it in her own way. She always has, and always will. There will be more ice ages and there will be more tropical ages. The Sahara will once again be a Sea, and palm trees will grow at the poles. We humans, assuming we're still around, will once again hunt ice-borne pachyderms (maybe even with pointed sticks) sometime after the approaching Hot Age.

And in 6 billion years our Sun will explode (but we'll be long gone before that, becuase before it explodes it will become a Giant and its size will extend into Jupiter's orbit) and Ice Ages and Global Warming and the price of gasoline and the fuel consumption of SUVs and all of the other crappe that people get hysterical about won't matter one iota.

In the meantime I am going to make shavings and sawdust out of pretty wood. Ya'll have fun freakin' out about a natural phenomenon that will take care of itself, just like it has for the last few billion years.

Cheers!

Gary

Gary,

I agree...every thing is a cycle, LIFE itself is. So you mean it doesn't matter if we accelerate everything like our lives? We can elect not to take care of our body and die much earlier and turn to dust to be reborn. Our planet is the same IMHO and though it can take care of itself...it may take millions or billions of years though. Years that mankind may not have.

Yes, some people/groups are are taking advantage of the issue but it doesn't mean it is not happening. Denial (or playing the blame game) is not the answer.

I am bowing out of this thread.

I was out of line on my statement and to those I offended, my apologies.

13 degree might be cold to some people. especially to us Californians. yet I have been in weather that the daily average temp has hit -60 below zero. (Greenland)

I tend not to travel to the snow anymore!:smile-big: I like the warmer climates!

This winter so far has been the coldest that it has been in the last ten years or so. And it just officially turned winter too yesterday. It was actually in the negative numbers yesterday and add that the wind chill was way way below that and it was a high wind advisary on top of that. Reminds me of the winters we had in the late 70's. Of course I remember some winters where its been in the 60's, lol. But I would rather have the cold then the snow myself.

(snip)

Nah, I only meant that I come to this place to learn about pen turning from people who know more* about turning pens than I do, and not to worry about the World - there are other places for discussing that.

FWIW, I am of the opinion that we are going to snuff ourselves out lonnnnnnng before any change of climate can cause our untimely extinction. All that will be left are some cockroaches and bacteria, and so the Global Weather will be left to Mother Nature again - until the next generation of aerosol-using, SUV-driving, top-of-the-food-chain beings start screwing with Terra's thermostat again.

In the meantime, I will be happily making shavings and dust out of pretty wood.

I jumped into this thread with guns blazin' and so am as guilty as anyone - I apologize for dragging things away from pen making and freezing furnace exhast too.

Cheers!

Gary

And there were 70 knot winds here in downtown Juneau with single digit and double digit temperatures -- and the first story teller never has a chance (check the weather service for the winds if you want)

I'm glad there was global warming after the last Ice Age. If not for that, there would have been no human civilization. The glaciers have been receding for more than 10,000 years.

Implicit in your criticism of "the other side" is an important admission. The idea that global warming is a human-caused phenomenon that we can do something about comes from "the other side." Why do you suppose that is the case? There are learned, highly educated points of view that are contrary to the man-made global warming theory. Do you discount all of them as merely the blind bias of political opposition? From your post, it would seem so.

I don't have a clue whether there is really man-made global warming, but I instinctively doubt it. What I do believe 100% is that the news and information on the subject is so thoroughly polluted with political rhetoric that none of it can be believed.

Dario,
I can't speak for the others, but I was just bantering with you. Not meant to offend or to pretend to be offended. Sorry it seemed like an argument.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Look, all this started when I attempted to make a joke about how the media portrays global warming and Dario's response to it. Dario and I have cleared it up privately. It was not my intent and I'm sure it wasn't Dario's either to start a debate about the merits of global warming. We all need to remember what this site is about. We come here to relax, share our passion about pen making and sometimes what's happening in our lives. Lets not get caught up in the extraneous.
And just for the record, in the future when you see one of my posts that is not about pen making the odds are I'm trying to make a joke, unfortunately my style of humor does not seem to come off as well in print.:frown::redface:

It's cold when you go out to the shop to have a cigarette and the zippo lighter you left out there won't light and needs to be warmed up before it will.....
6 degrees and -16 real feel this morning
