Hey guys and gals. I've been honing my skills casting for awhile and finally decided to share what I've been working on lately. I've got about 20 lbs of burl cutoffs consisting of Red Mallee, York Gum, Corrugata, and a couple of others. This particular piece is 3/4 x 1 1/2 x 5 1/2 York Gum Burl with some alumilite clear and blue pearl-ex. As always, comments good or bad are always welcome.

That looks really nice, I'd like to see it made into a pen.

Good job on learning to do that. How long did it take you to figure it out?

Tom

Tom,
With all the resources here at the IAP, it didn't take very long to learn at all. Researching really does pay off. It did however, take awhile to get them exactly the way I wanted. There is no replacement for experience and I'm sure I have a lot yet to learn, but I'm pretty happy with my results as of late. Hope this helps.

Dave,

As a concept it appears to have adhered closely however my experience tells me the proof is in the turned blank so what do I think?

I know that there can be many a slip between the blank and the pen also there are four sides to a blank all of then different when turned to the round and look forward to the proof of the mix with your chosen kit.

Colour choices are subjective so the result in the long run will not be judged on the combination per se but on our own predudices relating to all of the above.

Lately I have observed also you have ventured into another development that is who invented this or that, when, how etc. Every person is entitled to his or her own opinion but as was shown recently the when components can go back a long way before designated firsts or loyalty albeit in innocence. People with perpetual peeves such as centre bands or not, kit pens will devote lots of time and energy pushing their own preferences with little regard to the experience you have provided with your blank both at this stage and the finished product.

Supporting the use of otherwise worthless pieces of particularly burl has great merit especially for me reading your choices of timber to experiment with without being parochial.

Wish you success in this venture trust you enjoy the ride.

Kind regards Peter.

Thanks for the kind words you guys. I really dont know which one I enjoy more: making the blanks, or turning the blanks!!!

Hi Dave -
You're right, this site is a wealth of information and a real knowledge resource.

First I ordered a chamber from Curtis to start stabilizing, with the ultimate goal of casting with wood(like you've shown here). So I kept reading the Blank Making and Casting & Stabilization forums (entirely), and decided to start casting so that after I got my chamber I'd have some of the casting learning curve under my belt already.

Then the Birthday bash came along with the Alumilite discount and how could anyone interested in casting Alumilite pass that up? I'm working in my basement so I didn't want to try PE due to odor.

You're right Dave, just reading from this site gave me enough good solid information to start casting successfully.

I'm looking forward to taking the next step like you've done here, good job.

For Mordi

Here's a pic to help explain what I sent you in the PM. Hope this helps.

Dave

Thanks for the pic - that really helps!

What are the dimension of that mold? Looks like you get two blanks out of the mold?

Molds

I have several sizes actually. Most of which are 5 1/2 long and 1 1/8 deep (I usually only pour to 7/8" - 1"). For the width, I usually size them to how many blanks that I need plus the kerf of my tablesaw blade. So in essence, I have two, three, and four blank molds. I also have a half blank size for single barrel pens. It just makes more sense to me that way. Hope this helps.
