Boy, I sure would hate to have the tool snag on that chunk of wood.....

Actually it looks like he is adding pressure to the back of the cutting tool!

I don't think I could stand a tractor running that close to me while I'm turning, that would really get annoying.

Better check the web site Brian, the Aussies might not appreciate your comment. Especially since the inspiration to do a huge pen was based on "some American" claiming the largest pen.
 
I'm reminded of a similar project that I 'bloused' from at least a year ago. It was another huge glued up bowl turned on an axle. Heck, it might even have been this one, but I was thinking that it was done in the UK.
 
Guessing from the position of the hand, I would think that guy #2 is showing guy #1 where to position his elbow to get the best angle, I doubt he is applying much pressure with the back of his fingers.
