Hi im in bradenton florida and have some lathe experience. So im looking to get started it pen turning. I have a drill press and a band saw. A friend is loaning me a full wood lathe, its an old delta and I think it uses a mt1 taper. Will I get any less quality out of a mt1 compared to a mt2? Also is it possible to use a mini metal lathe to turn pens? Like one from harbor freight?

Welcome Jeri, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.

Welcome Jeri!!

A Morse taper 1 will do fine work!!

As for the metal lathe---don't know, but someone will!!

Take a look at our new section to the Library, Penturning 101--it's a great place to "get your feet wet". If you have questions, just ask!!

Another welcome. I have a HF 7X10 metal lathe and a 9X20 HF Metal Lathe and have turned pens on them. More on the 9X20. The 7X10 is really limiting.

Last month I bought the HF 5 Speed 10X18 Wood Lathe and now use it. Does the job just fine.

Will be glad to see your work as you progress.
