I don't suppose anyone knows if I can use "Silmar 249" for casting. I ordered my 3rd gallon of Silmar 41 last week but they sent "Silmar 249 -- Clear Polyester Layup Resin" instead. I need to cast some blanks for Rudy Vey today.

Thanks,

Last year they did the same thing to me. They sent me a 5 gal pail of it. They did make good on it and sent me out another 5 gals of 41 and I got to keep the 249. This resin is mainly for surfboards it will work. Only thing or a few things it builds heat faster so if you are using resin saver molds you are fine if you are using a larger mold with more mass it will generate a lot more heat so a little less cyst. Also it will be just a little more brittle that is not a problem for me if I am turning it as it takes a little more care. But in the end you can not tell a difference. Now I didn't use that 5 gals. to sell because it is more difficult to turn more brittle.

That's my experience if your used to turning 41 then use 249 it will be easier to chip but if your are careful it will work.

Hope I helped.

Thanks for the info Bruce. Since the blanks are not for me, I'd decided not to take any chances. I will wait till USCo resolves the mixup. In the meanwhile, I bought some CC from Michael's. If they let me keep, then I guess I can experiment a little.

Thanks,

Thanks,

It will work just fine it looks a lot more blue then the 41. And it sets quicker and dose not leave a sticky top residue like 41 but is more brittle. just for the more brittle reason I don't use the 5 gal to make blanks I sell. But for my own use it is just fine. I do have a metal lathe that helps me get to round then I just shape the blank with a 1/2" oval skew just using it as a scraper to get final shape. You can't get aggressive or it will chip once you get the feel of it it will be fine. The big difference with 249 is that it not made more deep or mass molds it will develop more heat and if you are doing say a 1" deep x 6x6" mold it may crack. Smaller 3/4" or resin saver molds will be fine.

If you get to keep it and you probably will because the return fees and hazmat will be more than it is worth to them. You probably got it UPS cause USPS don't ship resin. If they want you to return it tell them the closest UPS drop off is like over 30 miles away and UPS drop off is not an option for you.

Good luck

Roy's correct. US Composites does not charge hazmat costs for 1 gallon. They only charge for 5 gallons or more.

Yes I agree but that is UPS I think USPS is different I have always gotten shipment by UPS. In fact that is how I got to keep my mix up. I would not agree to go to a UPS drop off and it could not be picked up by USPS. I don't know for sure just curious if it came USPS.

The return shipping label was UPS.

One other thing, FYI, This gallon (my 3rd) of S41 lacked the blue tint. It was clear. I used it over the weekend and had no issues. I messaged USCO just to double check and I was told:

"That's not uncommon from batch to batch. I have seen varying differences in the tint of the liquid resin. Sometimes it has been so deep blue we thought it would never dry clear, but when we tested it, still it seems to always dry clear."

I thought it was UPS and my resin was always clear maybe just a very slight tint of blue. Now the 249 is blue for sure.

.

Not to change the subject, but I was talking to someone at USCO last week and they me the shelf life for S41 is 3 months, not 6 months.
