This is one of my many favorites. A friend said he would not consider this a highly figured stock. I am always looking for stock like this. Seems like every time someone post new stock I miss the boat.
To be blunt in my answer, no, that is not highly figured wood which I believe is Olive wood.
I can see the reflection of the wood under and I can see that is some figure that is most common in an average Olive wood pen blank.
If I would put it in my grading system, where exhibition or high grade (1) is the best blanks, grade -2 as a good average blank and grade -3 as a pretty plain wood blank, yours would be under the grade-2, in my view.
A highly figured blank, in any type of wood, or burl, are the best ones that the log or burl produced however, what a lot of folks call exhibition grade, to me is grade-1, is only one "grade" above grade-1 and those are what I call the *Gems*, they are the 1 in 1,000 to 2,000 blanks processed that is of exceptional quality/figure/colouration.
I sometimes share some of these with my best regulars, they are never enough, I know...!
This is just one example of what Grade -1 Olive wood should look, at least...!
Don't be upset if the truth is not what you expected/wanted, even if you were charged and told that was a highly figured blank, it happens all the time however, this is when you learn and become aware of what to expect from the different wood grades that you see on sale, even if they don't say what grade they are, you will learn to recognize what you are seeing and don't be fooled but sales lies and tricks.
If you require Grade-1 Olive wood blanks, you just let me know...!
Cheers
