My main interest is intarsia and scrolling. Lately I bought a piece of butternut for a project and it had a "bad" spot in it about 12" long 3'1/2" wide. My question is How hard is it to make this into a piece of "worthless wood" (I think thats what its called here)? Do I have to buy a lot of equiptment to do this? Or just pitch it?

In order for it to work for me i have had to obtain some alumilite (can get expensive), a pressure pot, some molds, a warm shop, and tons of time to experiment, so if you were looking to just cast up a couple things, id ask around the forums and try to get someone to do it for you... If you want to dive into it, the library is an ocean of casting information!

Are you trying to fill the whole 12" x 3'1/2" space full of resin??? Most resin cures through heat and i would imagine a void that large would crack...

On the other hand, if you are looking to fill a void in wood so you can use the board, marine epoxy with colors (or commonly black) can be used to fill the holes with little or no special equipment. Such repairs are common in woods like Mesquite.

I have the Demonstration notes from the Richmond AAW meeting last year with a couple of pages from one of the demostrators who showed how to use epoxy fills (She uses black and white fillss). You do not get all the colors, swirls, and patterns that Jonathon alludes to in his message above.

Depends on what you want to do and how elaborate you want it to be.

That makes things a bit easier! What i would do is if there are voids everywhere, id rip it on a table saw so it is square, then with your 15 or so strips, cut them to about 5 1/4" long and get a mold that size (mesquite mans post in the library sill solve a lot of questions) I started ww with CC Polester Resin and if worked fine, but you faced alot of wood, resin separation. You don't have to always use pressure to make ww wood, and if i were you, id recommend asking someone on the forums to cast up a couple for you if you are only planning on doing a couple of them...

Here are a couple pictures of the board. It is actually just shy of 16 x 4".
sounds like I'd have to invest in things I would use a lot. Is anyone interested in this piece of wood, in exchange for a blank or two?

With a piece like that, I would cut out the pieces that would make good WW and put exactly what you want into the mold instead of ripping it like I previously said... PM me if you come across any more questions or need more clarification!

I use an ANCIENT jar of Folgers instant! I think the crystals help!!! LOL
