ugly pen

The pen i entered in the ugly pen contest was bark and hardwood cast in pr w/o pressure pot. The reason i put it in the ugly pen is when i started sanding the pen it went wop te wop te wop because of how soft the bark was compared to the rest of the pen. I may have been better if the cast was put in a pressure pot. I can't say for sure because i do not have one.

When I cast some manzanita worthless wood using PR everything was great except the bark area never set. And I did use both vacuum and pressure. I ended up digging all the bark out of the rough-turned blank and filling with CA+ebony dust. Looked great in the end but what a PITA.

Do all wood types do this? No idea. But if you cast manzanita, make sure to remove all the bark. Either before you cast or after, your choice.

When I first started doing ww, I disregarded the need to debark the box elder I was working with. Everything would have worked out had the bark been harder(a few members can testify to that)... As long as the bark is stable enough and you get a good bond with whatever you cast it in, it should work out...
