Worst Day in Pet Owners Life

This is one of the worst things a person has to go through. I am so sorry. There is, however, a pleasant place for him to go where he will be met by many more like him. We call it Rainbow Park.

I am one big ugly guy, but when we did the same I sat in the lobby and sobbed.

My heart feels for you

I went through the same with our 10 year old Australian Shepherd last October. It was one of the toughest, if not the toughest thing I have ever had to do, and I've had to do some pretty tough things in my life.

I wish I could tell you that you'll get over it but I think it's something you never quite actually do get over. I'm convinced that God made dogs to counterbalance, make up for some of the crud you otherwise are forced to go through in life.

I've had dogs all of my life and it's tough to lose any of them regardless, but it's different 'putting them down' and I understand your hurt. I just kept telling myself that she was better off because she was really beginning to have a hard time of it at the end.

After about six months, we got a new puppy. She's great but I still really miss the old one. I don't care what people say about them 'just being an animal,' it only indicates to me that they never had one like this.

Anyway, sorry to be a 'downer' but I do feel for you and wish you all the best.

sorry for your loss. we had 2 cats that pased away a couple of years ago 1 passed at 18 years and the othe passed 2 years later at 19.

Unfortunatly, I've been through that awful ordeal twice in my adult life. While it is a very difficult decision, it is always made out of love and respect for the quality of life for your four-legged family member. I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. You have to remember that if you were keeping him alive for you it was unfair because he gave you so many good years of his life with no questions asked so you made the right decision. You don't ever totally get over it but time helps and another 4 legged friend will make the days much better.

Sorry for your loss. That is the problem with dogs, they just don't live long enough but they are worth the pain. I've been through it many times, have had lots of dogs and I cherish the memories of each and every one. The quickest way for me to get over the loss is to get another dog. Doesn't mean I forget the past ones but it give me a new one to love. As long as I am capable of caring for one I will have a dog.

I'm like Paul, I've had to put down way too many dogs and a couple of horses, my best friend is nearing 10 and she's getting a little stiff in the hips, I can't imagine what it will be like when the time comes. She literally saved my life, and gave me a reason to keep breathing. What you have done is a hard thing to do, and I feel very sorry for your loss, it never gets any easier either, they aren't just animals, they are the most trusting loving friends we could have, but rest easy knowing that Beau is no longer in any pain, and you'll meet him on the Rainbow Bridge some day.

Sorry for your loss. I had to do the same to two of mine about a year apart a few years ago.
I agree. You can never replace your best friend but there is always room for a new best friend.
And if you haven't heard of the Rainbow Bridge, check out this -

I'll have Lakota be on the look out at the Rainbow Bridge. He loves new pack members.

It's been three years since Lakota started his pack at the Rainbow Bridge and Lillian and I still think of him daily, even with 12 dogs in the house, his presence is still felt and missed.

Love the one you have all the more, it can be even harder on the ones left behind when one of the pack passes. We had to stoop to getting a vitamin B12 shot for one that refused to eat after Lakota passed. She simply got depressed.

After losing three, 10+ year old dogs in a year we have had peace with two chihuahuas and a Cocker for about three years. All of them are completely different. Love each one as a family member. Hang in there, Ken.

My deepest condolences for your loss. It is always hard to say goodbye to a good friend. When Teddy got too tired to walk I knew it was time to say goodbye. I still miss him a lot. Your act was one of love and an act of not being selfish and keeping Beau alive for your needs. It is nice you have his son to keep you company, he will also miss his father and need extra hugs and love. Standard poodles are great dogs. I had Boris for 9 years before he left our lives, but not our hearts.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Sorry for your loss.
Cherish the time you had.
You gave him a great life and he made yours that much better.
4-6 million dogs get put down a year, many because of bad owners. You now have room for another and dogs can sense what you need and most. There are many dogs out there that need a good home.

People that never had dogs dont know what they are missing. You get so much more out of life having them around.
When I was 11 years old are dog got hit by a car. He was 4 years old and was a great dog, other then the fact he liked to jump the fence and wander around. That Is how he got hit. he could have had surgery but had a broken back and was very unlikely going to be able to walk and being an outside dog I thought it was best to put him down. My mom left the decision to me.
About 7-8 years ago we had to put down are basset hound. He was 14 maybe 15 and we had had him over 12 years. That was real hard but he was in a lot of pain.
The first dog that was truly mine is now with my mom. She has had her for almost 10 years. I had a fire in my apartment and my mom never gave her back when I found a new place. I know she only has a couple years left and it is very hard to think of that. She is a pit mix and was very abused before I got her. She needed surgery to rebuild her hip, Infections in a few places and had to have an eye removed years later but it was because of the abuse before I saved her. She was 20 min away from being put down. Best dog I have ever had maybe the best I have ever been around.

I know the pain all to well.

I have a new puppy now 7 months old basset hound. Still getting used to her. I think I like dogs better then puppies. But puppy breath is much better then dog breath.

Stumbled across this on an Arizona Silhouette web page...

...and felt I had to come back here to post it. Not only do they offer tribute to veterans and the fallen on Memorial Day but also this appropriate homage to man's best friend.

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?'' This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.. 'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked. 'Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up.' The man gestured, and the gate began to open. 'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveler asked. 'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. 'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?' 'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.' 'How about my friend here?' the traveler gestured to the dog. 'There should be a bowl by the pump.' They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.

When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree. 'What do you call this place?' the traveler asked. 'This is Heaven,' he answered. 'Well, that's confusing,' the traveler said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.' 'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's Hell.' 'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?' 'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.'

Sorry for your loss. I had to put down my little buddy "Buster Brown"
About a year ago and I still miss him bunches. He was a 7 yo
