I know this has come around before. And the access database that came of it, while it was good, it was lacking. And I found it hard to use. So I've decided to design my own.

First, I know some of you have your own way of doing thing, like with Excel, this is great. I'm not asking you to change what works.

Those who I want to hear from are those who are still looking for a better way to track their business. What I like is feedback from those who might be interested in a database to help keep track of their business.

I'm not planning to make this a accounting or bookkeeping program, I'll leave that to the pros. What I want to do is be able to track my inventory of my blanks, pen kits, my completed pens and crafts. I also want to keep track of customers. First off, I want to let you know that this will become a commercially available, if there is enough interest. And if there is no interest, then I will just use it for myself.

Now, for those who might be interested, I need a wish list. What would you like for this database to do for you.

My thoughts, so far.
--Wood Inventory, I don't want to limit it to just pen blanks.
--Kits Inventory, again not just pens.
--Track customers.
--Pen and craft kit assembly. Why would you need to enter a pen if you have the part all ready entered.
--Completed pens that you made before you started the program.
--Invoices as sales tracking. Being able to print an invoice and packing slip.
--Being able to print out inventory for taxes.
--Print out sales totals
--Print out sales taxes, for taxes.

Have I forgotten anything. Or have I not thought of something. This is all on the drawing board, so requests can be added. I will base some of this on the Penventory program. Which I love, I just don't like the fact that it isn't portable. I want to be able to throw this on my laptop and take it to a show or to my shop.

Please, all I would like is suggestions to make this database better. Or if you MIGHT be interested when I'm finished. If nobody posts, then I'll know nobody wants it. This is perfectly OK, no hurt feelings. At all. :D

Possibly a way to track supplies and tools purchased as well. I know that I track that on my spreadsheet so I know who to reorder from instead of looking thru a bunch of invoices. Also maybe a general pricing mark up guide. (I know there are a lot of different opinions on that, that's why I said general or maybe better, generic) I for one would be interested. I didn't really like penventory for my needs. Nothing wrong with it it just didn't have what I needed. Let me know if you decide to do this, I would like to try it out for ya.

Sell pen for cash, buy more kits, make more pens. My method. The first time I have to include Uncle Sam in that equation is when I pack it in.:)

Steve,
Could your DB track inventory in and out- supplies on hand - .. and bill of materials(cost of goods) in the mfg of the pens and other crafts... pens are actually less than 1/3 of my turning.. so I would like to track some of the other crafts I do same as the pens... Penventory was okay for tracking pens, but didn't really cover peppermills, game calls, etc...

I will make note of this, thanks.

on tracking customers I would probably want to know the last time I had a contact with them. Then I could drop them a line on a card or email so I don't drop off their radar next time they are looking for a gift. Say every 90 days their name and address comes up on a list that prints out on mailing labels.
