I need a wood id on the below. It is a pretty dense hardwood, heavy, has a very slight chime to it when you tunk two pieces together. It has a fairly tight grain, closed and not porous, very smooth. It reminds me of Katalox, in some ways, but it is neither as dark, nor does it have quite the chime. It came from a 5lb grab bag of a bunch of pen blank cutoffs and random blanks, so I have no specific information about what it is.

Jon; The blank on the left looks like cocobolo. I have made pens that incorporate both the heartwood and sapwood. The sapwood has very fine darker lines / spots in it. Not pores, just slightly darker.

I think you are right. I haven't had many with sapwood, but the rest of the grain characteristics does look like some other cocobolo blanks I have. The heartwood has fewer streaks...lot o the other cocobolo I have has dark and darker dark streaks in the heartwood. But, there is this dark border between the sapwood and heartwood, that seems to be consistent with other photos of cocobolo with sapwood that I am finding. The grain looks the same as those photos as well.

I think we have an ID! :D Thanks!

I'd go with cocobolo... if not, it may be some strange Palm?

I went with Cocobolo. Its definitely not a palm, and after searching for more photos of cocobolo, its definitely what it is. The darker layer between the sapwood and the core of the heartwood, seems to be a common trait of cocobolo, and that's exactly what these blanks have.

Thanks for all the help!
