Picked up some wood and realized I have no idea what kind it is. The only clues I have is that it was packaged in Indonesia and it is hardwood. The first 6 are 3/4" and the 2nd 6 are 1/2". I slightly dampened the wood after sanding and took pictures of the side grain and end grain. Any help identifying this wood would be greatly appreciated. TIA:biggrin:

Good Luck, Rob.

The third one from the left on the first two pics COULD be Yellowheart or Ceylon Satinwood. I THINK they are the same wood, but sell for a lot more money as "Satinwood".

It will HELP when you cut them. Each species has its own odor/aroma--but that's only helpful if you recognize it.

When I have this problem, I just refer to it as "spalted" or "figured" wood--most people don't ask the species, so I don't have to speculate.

Not much help, sorry!!

Thanks all. This wood supply was an experiment that I won't be using again. Very inexpensive source for this wood but I won't use it for pen blanks if I can't identify it. I will throw it in a corner with the rest of the growing pile of "no clue" wood. There were a lot of spalted stuff too, lol.

Why not sell them as "no clue" pens if they turn out nice looking. Just because you don't know the wood species doesn't make it junk.

Just a pet peeve of mine. For some reason I don't feel right selling a pen if I can't tell the customer what the wood is.

Looking at the spalting in the few you have shown, I would definitely turn them and make pens out of them. Who cares what the name of the wood is if it makes a beautiful pen!

IF you do not want to use them, I am sure there are many members that would like to take them off your hands. Offer them here and let someone else use them. They look too interesting to waste in a pile someplace in your shop.

Also, would you care to share with the membership your source for this 'mystery wood?'

I recently bought 480 blanks, 4 separate auctions, on eBay of mystery pen blanks, http://tinyurl.com/2383fs7 and paid no more than $36 for each of the 120 blank lots. Can't wait to get back home and try to identify them. I'm sure there may be some I'll not be able to.

Rob, I'd be interested to pay for the shipping if you'd like to get them out of your piles. they would help me to hone my skills since I am just getting started. Of course, I hope you take the advise and just turn them and see what comes out of them. I'd bet you they would turn out beautiful, how ever if you are not going to use them then, consider my offer, plz. No pressure. thank you. good luck, you may be able to find the answers in the sites that are on links.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions:biggrin:

BTW found this awesome picture to help me in the future!
