Come on you wood gurus .. I need help identifying this.

Hank sent me a box of beautiful blanks and this one is marked 'unknown'.
I think I'm going to want more of this one.

It doesn't seem to have an observable odor, (although my shop is full
of curing resins urethane and silicone) and is fairly dense, heavy
( +/- 9 g/cu cm) very hard and seems like it will take a high polish.
High chatoyance, too. I might not use anything but an oil on it.

What do you think?

It is Afzelia Burl. Some pieces i turned looked like that.

I don't know.. I've got some afzelia burl in the shop and it doesn't look
like it up close. (although pics don't always show what you see in person)
I don't usually see the veins in the afzelia, but I haven't seen every piece,
either.

The Brownus Spottus Woodus is a close second, though..

OK, probably way off base but how about Kentucky Coffee Tree? I have some that looks like this but mine is more regular with respect to the grain.

I think an unknown wood of that color would get this name with a pen from me:
palo marron or palo rojizo... well, it sounds more exotic than "an unknown wood":biggrin:

Do a good turn daily!

Looks like jatoba to me:wink:

Jatoba - that is what it looks like to me. Reading on it brought one other thing to mind - a store salesman that I got that cut-off from - said it was used in flooring. I keep saying that it is Japanese because the particular store it was purchased from does not sell imported wood - as far as I know. But it could be.
