Can anyone ID the darker wood in this picture? All I know about it is it came on a pallet that was shipped from Indionesia.

I have tried to find the wood on the internet, but no luck. Tim

Sorry Jason, that's as close as I can get it. I tried getting it closer, and all I got was a blurry pic. The wood has alot of "fleck" in the figure. Similar in color to mahogany(probably a more reddish tint than any mahogany I have ever turned.) I've got some flat pieces. I'll try to get some different pics. Tim

look at the segment immediatly to the left of center. there is like a red band running through the orangeish color That is throughout the wood. Tim

When I first saw the pic, i thought Padauk. But since you said it was on a pallet, it's not likely to be that. Mahogany is much more likely to be used on a pallet, by far.

The species a pallet is made of depends greatly on what the pallet is to hold. Heavy things generally require a hardwood of some kind. All the air compressors (60 gal and bigger) at my favorite tool store look to be on either oak or ash.

Raw rubber is what was shipped on these pallets. That stuff is extremely heavy. There was only a couple boards of this wood. All the rest was just a plain grained wood about the color of oak. Tim

My wifes Grandfather was a expert carpenter during WWII. He trained German POW's in carpentry during their captivity. As a gift when they were released, they made a table from palets and inlaid all kinds of woods for a game table. Some of the woods included are mahogany, blackbean, some ebonies, rosewoods. I guess in some places and in older times, any wood available would make a good palet.

Darick, I thought I had some of that wood here, but it at my Dad's house. I'll be going there today. I'll pick up a piece of it and try to get some good pics to post this afternoon. Tim
