We had an ice storm several days ago. Little branches the thickness of a pencil were an inch thick with the ice. The next day it rained but the temp stayed around freezing, long and heavy icesicles formed on the branches, then a little more snow. It was beautiful and pretty amazing to see. Trees began falling down, sometimes limbs broke off, sometimes whole trees were uprooted and fell over. We lost five trees in the yard, not a big deal when you have a few hundred. Others didn’t fare as well.

Over the past weekend it was warm and time to clean up. After cleaning up my yard I made the rounds in the neighborhood, lots of people were happy to have a little help chain sawing and I came home with a load of wood. I brought home pieces of dogwood, spalted maple, persimmon, black locust, osage, holly, coffee tree, and some ornamentals. Then I made a short trip to a park on the Ohio River, the river had been flooded; driftwood everywhere. You can always find gnarly roots and other interesting stuff in the driftwood. Most of it is light and spongy, but there are always some solid and twisted pieces.

I’m going to have to build a barn for all this wood I’m collecting.
