Since I am venturing into other areas of turning and woodworking, I gotta gloat! Of course some of this will become pen blanks!!!

Up and running at sunrise this morning. Between then and now, Dawn and I made a trip to the 2 sawmills we frequent about once a (month about 150 miles round trip) both of which I occasionally buy off of on ebay also. Anyway, thought I would take a little time to show off my purchases, and gloat about the extras!!

Not that the truck is over flowing but everything on the right hand side of the truck bed was purchased off ebay and phone conversations. Everything else from the center to the left and side, were, well, FREE!! Including the 200lb + slab of cherry everything else is stack on and around!

Purchases include a box of turning mixed variety turning squares, Tulip turning blanks, large piece of Catalpa, White Oak and Black Oak boards.

In the mix of freebies is White Oak, Black Oak, Tree of Heaven (Stink Tree), Elm, Spalted Sweet Gum (one of my fave's!!), Spalted Hackberry (another Fave!!), Sycamore, Walnut, Mulberry, and a few others.

Dawn says that this is one big piece of Cherry!!

All the freebie* stuff came from one of the mills, Timbermite Sawmill which is the one I have the best rapport with. He had set aside the spalted woods knowing I would want them. He also told me he was allowing a few pieces (read this as tree trunks!!) to spalt before cutting them and will give me first choice!! If you happen to check out his stuff on ebay, don't even bother bidding on the Hickory boards just listed today. I have seen these in person and they will be mine!!!!

Mark and Tammy at Autumn Mill
gave me an awesome deal on the large piece of Catalpa also!!!!!

The large Cherry slab will become a project I had spoken to Kevin at Timbermite about back in March. My mother had been wanting a garden bench and at that time he had a slab of Black Oak but mom passed before I could get it and complete the project. Today, he asked whether or not I was going to go ahead and do a garden bench and I told him I hadn't given any more thought. He told me he had something for me "out back" and told me that if it would fit in my truck I could have it.

It will become a garden bench in memory of Mom. After a bit of trimming and clean up, some legs, and some serious polyurethane. Since we do not have a garden to speak of, it will come to reside on our front porch. Dawn felt this to be a good place for it and a good tribute to use it as a plant stand since Mom loved plants.

(Sorry for the plugs but these are some great people to work with!!)

* I have, do, and will continue to turn freebie items for Kevin from some of the wood he gives me. He says he might want something turned sooner or later too!

Like I said, "I've seen them!!" LOL!!!! If ya look real close at the bottom of the right center board, you can almost see my finger prints!!!!! They've practically got my name on them already!!!!

Besides, the time I get to converse with Kevin and Bennie is worth every penny I spend. Both love the outdoors. Bennie (runs the "yard" and saw) works for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Kevin, Timbermite's CEO (LOL!!), is a Master Arborist, works for the local electrical utility in his area but also travels all over the state of Illinois doctoring trees. The man's knowledge of trees and what makes them tick is amazing. They started up the mill simply because they grew weary of the waste of wood they have and continue to see. They laugh about the day they might break even!!!!!

Very nice wood score!

Be sure to use Spar urethane on that garden table and NOT regular polyurethane. Spar is designed for exterior (has UV inhibitors), where as poly is not.

There are other great products out there if you want to do some research and can find a distributor. Sikkens Cetol is a very well respected industrial exterior coating.

Looks like some great wood for the MPG. LOL Just kidding Greg. Nice wood

You'll never know what you might find at the MPG!!! There is even a rumor of a chance there might be a 55 gal. drum of casting resin on hand!!
