Some of you know that I had a walnut tree cut down last March. Well, I finally got it slabbed up for me yesterday and it was gorgeous. As it dried, it uglied up, but that's to be expected. I was surprised that it had so few cracks. I put anchorseal on it last year, but couldn't reach 40% of it. I may turn a few pens from some of the crotch, but most of this is going for furniture I hope to build. I'm also turning a bowl for the previous owner of the tree. I got one large crotch slab, for a platter.
Now if you know me, you also know that I have yet to turn a bowl, so this is somewhat wishful thinking. I also have to wait a couple of years, to use the lumber for my desks and armoiere. I didn't even know the guys who cut it for me. They only charged me as much wood as they could carry away. After filling my truck, which they also did for me, there is still half of the tree left.
I hope this is the right forum for this. I know we used to have a wood gloat forum.
The crotch before slabbing it up into the platter blank and the bowl blank.
Most of the wood. I got another 2 large slabs after this shot was taken. These slabs are all 2" thick and average 18" wide and over 6' long. There is no pith in what I got.
Thank you Jeff and Andy. You guys are awesome. I hope they see this, but they're from a local AAW group, in Jersey. Andy used to be a pen turner too. Oh yeah, they estimated that the slabs weighed in at about 200 pounds for the 24" wide ones. I'm glad I didn't have to try to move them.
