I have an order to make a pen for someone who once served in the Peace Corps in Panama. The buyer wants it to be a wood species that grows in Panama. I have a piece of purpleheart that is suposed to be from Panama. Dose anyone have any suggestions for a wood that is a little more interesting? Does cocobolo grow in Panama? What about bocote or kingwood?

I think all of the species you mentioned are all "Central-South American" species, so it is a good possibility they grow there. Sorry, not a definitive answer, but I think you are looking in the right direction.

Panama has a distinctive variety of Cocobolo that's a bit more orange (I think) than the Nicaraguan.. I think it was Dale the Burl Guy (Google him) that listed them by country...

It might have been Gilmer's...I really don't remember...

[SIZE=-1]With seven primarily native species (in addition to secondary forest growth) including well known species such as coco bolo (rosewood), Mahogany, Teak, Cedro Espino, Amarillo and other commercially popular species Futuro Forestal has an ideal portfolio for existing commercial markets (both locally and in the export markets).

Will keep looking!

Does it need to be FROM Panama, or just something that grows there but may grow elsewhere? It could be tough getting something that was certified FROM Panama if you didn't know the person sending it, but I would think many Rosewoods (like Cocobolo) grow in or around Panama. Lignum Vitae and Teak are also native, and can be gorgeous, although definitively "from Panama" may be tricky. I've read Ebony grows there, but not positive what else. I have some Lignum and lovely Teak that you could use, but I have no clue where they're from, as I got them from Ebay. PM me if that helps you at all.

Good Luck!

Quick research left me with the following woods: Espave, Mahogany, Amarillo, Grandillo, Cocobolo, Bocote, Canarywood, and Purpleheart. You should be able to find some nice blanks out of almost any of these. Bob I.

I'm looking for something that grows in Panama, not necessarily a blank that was grown in Panama, I was clear with the customer about that.
Ed, the canopy tower site is perfect, I know these people stayed in the canopy tower when they visited Panama.
Cocobolo looks like a safe choice and I have plenty of it. I also have some Lignum and Bocote that I'll have to take a closer look at.
Thanks all for your time and offers for wood, there are a bunch of generous folks here.
BTW, the pen will be a gift for a young guy who just graduated from FBI training, I'm thinking Jr. Gent.

Quick quiz, don't look it up please. If you were traveling from the Pacific to Alantic Ocean and you were in the Panama canal, what direction would you be headed?

It looks like Ed wins the valuable un-named prize and I didn't fool anyone. The Panama canal runs north and south with the north end opening into the Atlantic side.
