I'm looking for some wood from Ireland. My wife wants a pen made from Irish wood. I've searched but can't find a supplier. I've heard of Irish Bog Oak, but the only sites I can find only sell finished products not the wood.:(

Hi Dale,
Ebay has had some irish bog Oak for sale in the past. usually its around 1/2 sq, someone here had some larger stuff they found, don't remember exactly who it was.

I have some Irish Hawthorne, it is again around 1/2 sq by 5" if I remember correctly. I can try to post a picture of it tomorrow, I am at work right now.

there's a raffle going on under IAP fundraising right now- and included in the blanks are 4 top grade oversized Irish Bog oak- 7/8" square, by 6 3/4" long......check out the pics....

Dale,

Please read this in a very friendly tone!!!

Irish Bog Oak is NOT an easy wood to turn and it IS expensive.
Finishing it is also a pain. It has a deep grain with voids. IF you find some, get enough to make a couple mistakes, first.

I don't know of any other woods from Ireland, so can't help you find a better answer.

(BTW, if you succeed, Irish Bog Oak pens are beautiful and will command a premium price - $100ish)

FWIW[:D][:D]

Thanks to Lou, I was able to finish several IBO's. I used lacquer, and sanded and polished between each layer of finish until everything was filled in. It was a long process, but the finish was great. Worth the effort, methinks.

I have some Irish bog oak in lumber form that I can cut large (3/4 x 5 to 6") blanks from. This wood is not near-black like some I have seen but is medium-dark brown. Email me if you are interested.

Thanks for the warning. The wood really doesn't have to be bog oak, that's just the only wood I've found mentioned as from Ireland. I suspected it would be expensive when I had trouble finding somebody that sells it. Heck I'm having trouble finding any wood from Ireland, so maybe there all expensive. [:D]
My wife doesn't really care what kind of wood, it could be pine (does Ireland even have pine trees[?]) as long as it's from Ireland.

Again, thank you everyone for offering leads and help.
