We are trying to develop a wood database specifically designed for pen turners. I suppose you can use it for bottlestoppers, pepper grinders, etc.:)

If anyone has info on woods they would like to share, please send it to me as I will try and compile it in the next few months into a workable list for everyone.

Info needed:
Name or names used (sometimes a wood is called many things)
Family name or species name (latin)
where it is found
Tree description
How it turns
Dangers
Finishes that work best
Characteristics
Endangered? (some of us want to stay away from illegally harvested woods)
Etc

I really need all your pen turners help on this. Please don't send any copyrighted material as I don't want our group to get in trouble.

Credit will be given to all who help with info!

JEFF, WILL YOU STICKY THIS?
Thanks

I use these links. How much you can collect from them without getting into trouble is a question. If you look, most share the same info (verbatim on some) anyway.

Hope this helps and as I said...I will try to contribute more specific info after the "base" is built.

Good luck!!!

I have looked at these sites Dario and there is some good info there. I will pull what I can off of there, but I need specific info on penturning as well.

In a week, I will post what we have and what we can go from there too.

Hey Bill,
If you can get your hads on a disc, "Woods of the World" a lot of the information you need is listed..

Name or names used (sometimes a wood is called many things)
Family name or species name (latin)
where it is found
Tree description

Characteristics
Endangered? (some of us want to stay away from illegally harvested woods)

don't think it will have the turning info, or finish.. but is pretty good info.

Great idea!

What kind of database are you using? I'm a database programmer (mySQL/Perl) by day so if I can be of any help just let me know!
