i was at a class today - nothing to do with wood - but there was a guy there showing off the pens he made and sells. mostly domestic hardwoods. he had one that ive never seen before, it was ONE PIECE, not a lamination. one side was light, like a white oak, there was a very dark, blackish 1/8 stripe down the center, and the other side was reddish brown. i asked about the wood but he had no idea.

anyone seen anything like this before? dont know if it was part heartwood and part sapwood maybe? but it was definitely unique.

something like this?
yes!!, it looked like that (other than the white stripe), but it was not a lamination. you could see the lines where the colors joined were not straight and clean, they followed a grain and bled together.

i regret not getting a picture, but it was not convenient at the time. i have another class next weekend but i doubt he will be there. (passing this class was a pre-req and he left early)

I believe walnut can have the same effect too. Desert ironwood as well. Probably others.
