I was making a gun metal gray PR mix. 10 oz of PR, a couple pinches of macropearl and went to add the black opaque dye from the Castin Craft 1oz bottle I just bought. I tipped the bottle and gave it a squeeze to squirt out some black and POP! The plug popped out and went into the resin, along with half the bottle of dye! ACK! WAY too much!

Thinking the resin was now heavily overloaded, I added another 2 oz of PR (as much as the cup would hold) and added a bit more MEKP than normal. The resin was REALLY thick and difficult to stir. I poured it and let it cure for a couple hours then tossed it in the oven.

Well, apparently 1/2oz of dye plus some macropearl is not enough to overload 12 oz of PR since it's still turnable! A bit more brittle than usual, but solid.

Wanna know what really sucks about this? Aside from the wasted dye... Crap is *still* translucent! I forgot to paint the tube and brass can be barely seen through the PR. Sigh...

All that said, I think I like the PearlX carbon black better.

I've definitely found that dyes tend to be transparent, pigments tend to be opaque.

One thing I really want to add to the resin color library is some way to measure opacity, and correlate that to whether you need to paint your tubes or not.
I've got some great swirls that I should have painted their tubes on.

I think all acrylics should be painted unless you are going for the brass look. It really stinks to have a wicked sweet blank and a super nice fit and finish, only to have a spot of brass shining back at you. I even paint the tubes for ebonite and trustone.

Yeah, that was an oopsie of mine. I was creating a matched pen/pencil set using the slim single barrel method. This has been one problem after another. Some are of my own doing (the added dye, failure to paint the tubes), one specific problem not: The "black chrome" plating is too thick. Couldn't get the clip on without grinding the clip hole wider. Grrr...

I use a chainsaw file for that same job. A little less aggressive than something with a motor.

are you following a tutorial on the single barrel slim? Every time i see one, i get more interested in the design. Especially the nib operated refill!

I skimmed the tutorial, but didn't follow it. I did find that the lower half is awful difficult to remove when all you have to grab onto is the nib! Took some sanding and polishing of both the upper tube and the transmission to get it to come out...
