After reading posts around I decided I would NOT upgrade to Vista for at least another year when all the bugs were worked out. Never say never cause my puter had different ideas about it. I was aware that my graphics card was giving up in my 4 yr old puter and was prepared to replace that but then I got the msg "hard drive failure emminent" Well Crap! After pricing the cost of the repairs against a new puter I went with the new of course. I spent the entire day yesterday transferring stuff over only to find out...
My virus program doesn't work with Vista and an upgrade is not available yet. They do give you a 2 mo trial so hopefully by then the other will work.
The printer/scanner does not work with Vista - it's only 6 mos old - and no upgrade available yet.
I have a couple of smaller progs that I like to use for fun but of course they don't work with Vista.
Outlook express? It was simple and had I 2 identities, one for mail and one for garbage. It's now windows mail and only has one identity but will import other mail. Heck, if I wanted to read all the junk I wouldn't have 2 identities to begin with.

Overall ease of use...Well I'm sure I'll get used to it but I don't think I should have to. It's just a lot of little things that are annoying. If you want to improve a program fine! go ahead but quit hiding things LOL. It's like walking into a Walmart and finding the store totally rearranged. I realize this is only my 2nd day on here and hopefully I will change my mind before I find out what else will no longer work. So far I don't have anything really positive to say about it but will post it here if I find anything. For now, I'd save my $ and hold off on any upgrades.

Dang ----Shirley--- my 7 year old Puter is on it's last legs and then you post all these warm fussy thoughts. I am still running ME and using a phone line.

FYI.. I have been told that if you are going to use Vista, that it's best for a computer that has been built with it. I have only heard bad about the "upgrade" Howerver fresh installs seem to be the way to go. I guess it's just not as upgradable as prior upgrades.

Yup, Windows changed the paradigm in how things work. So, a majority of the old programs and drivers do not work under the new os. I work for a software company, and can tell you that we have been working our backsides off trying to get everything to run and play nice under their new design. It will take time for the software to be ready for it. This is a big of a change as 3.11 to 95. But in 95 they gave you the ability to fake running 3.11 programs. Now it is a security risk so you can't do that....

Shirley you jest!! (sorry, I just had to!) [:D]
Well, that does stink! The down side of getting the new program when it first comes out. At work I am always the last one to upgrade our database. I figure in a couple weeks if there are issues I will find out about it. [;)]

<br />but but but this is a new computer that was built for it. The main problem is nothing is compatible with Vista yet. Now I find my camera software won't work either[:(!]

I heard a report from M$ that if your bios is older than 3 years, then don't upgrade. So the bios date needs to be 2004 or newer. I'm not upgrading till a absolutely have to. Even though my computers fairly new.

I just purchased a laptop that had vista on it. Man what a headache. I wired my house with a cat 5 lan, and have my wifes and my computers talking very well. Both are XP and setup took about 10-15 min each to be up and running and sharing files. This laptop showed "unknown network" when I hooked it up. I finally got it on the WWW but it would NOT see the other computers to transfer files. After 2 days fighting with trying to find an option that should be "right here" I ended up using my ipod as an external hard drive to transfer everything. As someone in the IT world I am not that impressed from that standpoint yet. But as Bill Gates said WOW does it look good.

In a former life I was a MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) and worked as a Systems Administrator for a major toy company. I have come to the conclusion that Good Ol' Bill and the people at MS have really gone off the deep end with this new "Operating System". Not only is it virtually impossible to load properly in a machine not specifically built for Vista, but even in a machine built for it, there are loads of problems. On top of that the hidden MS security that has been added is horrible and IMO too invasive.
When my current machine starts to go south, my next machine will be a Mac. I never thought I would say that, but after a whole lot of research and being able to use a friend's new Mac, that is the direction I am going.
Everything I do on my PC can be done on the Mac, and if you really want to use MS Office.... MS makes a Mac version of the software...
Since most of my work is web development and graphics.... the Mac will be my next machine

I went that route a year and a half ago. I will never look back!

I am looking at other OS's so far Linux is topping my list with solaris coming in a close second. if it was not for my gaming addiction I would not have ms anything installed. I have been "in" computers for years, CP/M, Apple dos, Cobol, RPGII, token ring, and coax networks. IMHO upgrading to Vista, is like upgrading from 98 to me .... DON'T DO IT. wait for sp 1 at least if not another operating system to be released.

When the time comes for me to by some new laptops(one for me and one for LOML), I may get a Mac for me (I do a lot of photography now and the photo software is better) and a PC for LOML (she's uses it for school, Early Childhood Education). I figure that our current laptops are 3 yo and new ones can wait until next year unless they start crashing (which hasn't happened yet).
