Folks -

I have a really nice spalted maple blank that split in half just as I was finishing drilling it. I glued it back together, but I had been planning to toss it in the Minwax wood hardener. Does anyone know if this will soften or dissolve the PVA glue I used to repair it?

I'm wishing now I'd used epoxy.

The blank is only a bit soft, and could probably be turned as is, so if the Minwax will ruin it, I can turn it and just use some CA at the end to harden it up.

Thanks -

I got some information from the nice folks at Titebond on this, thought I'd pass it along.

There is the possibility that the acetone will adversely affect the
glue. This is an active solvent and is one of the solvents we recommend
to de-bond an assembly using our glues. Most often, the bond has to soak
for a time in the solvent before it is affected, but that is exactly
what you are doing. At the least the acetone will weaken the bond.

Minwax Wood Hardener turns CA to jelly!!!

I'd say tie a couple of pieces of thread around it and throw it into the stabilizer. The Minwax product appears to be nothing more than acrylic plastic dissolved in acetone. The acetone will probably melt the glue. After you pull it put and let it dry, it's probably hold together anyway. If not you can re-glue it, right?
