I have a choice between these for playing music and videos. Which one would be more worth it?

I like this one because it's an Apple and will probably have more downloads.

Jared,
I wouldn't spend my money on a no-name Chinese knock-off of the iTouch. Go look at Walmart, Target, Compusa, Check with Newegg and sign up for Woot.com Read the tech forums at slickdeals.net. As you get closer to Christmas the better the deals on the name brand MP3 players will be. Look for the Blackfriday listings, many are starting to put them up now, so they can be competitive. If there is a good listing for a Blackfriday ad, get some friends and go stand in line at midnight or earlier on Turkeyday so you can get the deal you are looking for.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Well, the problem with the knock-off is they have no brand name to back up with quality. Apple may well be built by the same area, but they have a brand name and a reputation to protect, so their quality is bound to be higher, as well as a warranty.

I would go with either an Appleor a Creative. The Creative line allows for more audio formats than the apple as well as more colors on the display.

There's a few things to consider:

Size: Will this live in your pocket or on the dash of your car. If it's going to be pocketed, I'd go with as small as possible. If not, you can afford a larger one.

Video: Will you be watching videos? Keep in mind, they take some technical savvy to obtain the vids, then to convert them to a format the player will accept.

Hard drive size: How many songs do you think you'll load on it, realistically. Few hundred, you can go with a 2 gig or so. Few thousand, you'll want to go with an 8 gig or higher.

You jogging with it or stationary: Now they have 'solid state' hard drives which are similar to the flash cards in your camera. They'll never skip, they're durable, they're fast, they don't hold as much. The larger capacity drives (30 gigs and up I think) are like the hard drive in your computer. They're sensitive to impacts, take a little longer to load up, take more battery power to spin.

Software: Do you want to be able to dump songs onto it or do you want to have to go through Apple's software and the restrictions that come along with it. If you don't mind them, then go apple. If you hate the thought, then go with Creative.

So, that's where I'd start... lol

There is a lot of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, & Doubt) cast by opponents of Apple and also UNintentionally by honest ignorance.

Contrary to what many believe, Apple is not holding and forcing people to buy their DRM protected music. The MUSIC INDUSTRY is the responsible party for legally forcing Apple to use DRM.

The same restrictions that apply to Apple also applies to other music software. MS has DRM requirements on their products also. This is set by the MUSIC INDUSTRY.

MS's DRM and Apple's DRM are different because each company was required to use it for their software. Apple was not going to pay a license fee to MS to use MS's DRM, and of course MS was not going to pay Apple to license Apple's DRM. Each (including REAL) wrote their own DRM, subject to approval by the Music Industry.

The iPod can import music from CDs with no problem. In Apple's license with the Music Industry is an agreement whereby the DRM can be stripped out of the music so that it can be written to a CD to be used in many different CD players. These DRM Free music CDs can be reimported to iTunes without the DRM.

I'm talking about putting existing mp3 on an ipod through iTunes, which you'll pretty much have to use to get your mp3s onto the thing. You can drag and drop through Windows with a Zen, something you can't do with an ipod. I know you don't have to buy new music.

I actually just recently purchased an .mp3 player. I bought one of the 'thumb drive' style one many years ago and hated it.

Anyways, after doing a lot of research and debating with the wide range of costs I finally picked up one on woot a couple of weeks ago: Sandisk Sansa 4gb e260 model. It is a refurb, but for that price, I can bang it around the shop and not feel as bad as I would have if I spend 4-5x that much on an Apple. Here is what led me in this direction:
- Apples are proprietary. While that's good for the company, it limits the user. See points below.
- You can change the battery yourself on the Sansa. Can't on an iPod. You have to ship it back. This is a known issue.
- You can use the standard .mp3 files on the Sansa and shift files around like you would on a usb drive. No special software needed.
- You can also do the video and photo thing on the Sansa (haven tried it yet).
- It has an FM radio. I actually used it the other day instead of listening to .mp3s.
- Has an microSD slot to expand storage.
- Much cheaper.

Now, they also make different models with larger capacities and screens. But for the price, I just couldn't understand why I would spend soooo much more on an iPod. I'm buying some really good earphones with the money I saved.

Good luck. Oh, I think this is my 100th post! Who whew....

I used to have a few old sansas. My daughter still uses an old 512mb one. Thats another good brand.

Both the iPod and the MS Zune will play DRM free mp3s. Last time I updated my Zune software the DRM was removed from the Zune "desktop" as so many people were rebelling against it and hacking their players.

Also if you use a CD ripping software like Media Monkey you have much more control over your metatags, bitrate encoding, resetting the sound value for those albums that were recorded at 2 when they sould have been recorded at 11, and file format.

Jared,

Didn't you say you were going to get an iPhone in my iPhone thread? If so, you do not need an mp3 player. The iPhone has one built in.

Jared, Buy a decent Digital camera, so we can see pictures of some of your work, The cameras in the phones and MP3 players won't cut it for showing off your work. Then you can sell more so you can buy more do it the Amurican Way.
(my apologies to Lyndon Bains Johnson)

They're kinda cool. I actually was thinking about a Blackberry instead. We have a Kodak digital camera already. I decided I'd get myself a Sony PSP instead.

You switched from an iPhone to a PSP?

Well, if you want to carry around an MP3 player that's as big as a two iPods and has probably a quarter the battery life....

OK Jared, if you have a digital camera, Why the deuce don't you favor us with pictures of your work? you seem to have internet (DUH) what else do you need?

I can't comment for the different brands from personal knowledge, but I hear a lot of complaining through the grapevine on those Itouch clones. Also, because of the amount of accessories available for the Ipod, you may wanna go that route.
