My daughter is encouraging me to make a yoyo for my S-I-L's Christmas gift. Does anyone have experience with both PSIs and CSUSA's ball-bearing yoyo kits and have an opinion as to which is the better one?

It looks to me like the PSI kit can be made on a standard 7mm mandrel with come bushings that I already have in stock. The CSUSA kit appears to be a little more puzzling as it has two (somethings) that press into a 5/8-inch hole drilled in the blank.

Thanks,

I purchased Ed's DVD...great little production on making yoyo's....and he does it without purchasing a kit.

I have not seen Ed's video, but I spent a lot of time with yo-yos.

I would think a "ball bearing" is a bad idea. Yo-yo tricks are dependent on the friction between the shaft and the string - if everything spins freely, how can you retrieve the yo-yo after you "walk the dog"??

Edd had talked about doing a update demo at the club to include the ball-bearing yoyo for people who wanted to do more tricks.

The video is quite nice - well worth getting it.

Lots of theories on this - but suffice to say, of the 45 plus yo-yos my son has (and he is truly a gifted yo-yoer), the ball bearing yo-yos are some of his favorite. The non-ball bearing are fun and have their challenges, but for a long sleep - ball bearings are tough to beat.

I'm looking forward to reading what others say about kits - I've been dabbling in yo-yos for awhile - made a couple that do well - but I want to get a bit more involved too.

Best,
Roger Garrett

Here's a first try - lots of things wrong with it - BUT - I'm smarter now than I was before... getting the two sides close to equal is the biggest problem.

This just has a wooden axle in it. Also, I don't have the proper string here in the house either so can't tell whether or not it wants to work correctly.
