Ok,
I have DSL internet and an external modem, a Motorola, style: MSTATEA.
I have intermitten problems with it, and it is geting worse.
Just out of it's 1yr warranty with AT& T where I purchased it from.
They want to sell me a new one, but I am guessing I can buy a lot cheaper elsewhere.
I am also a bit miffed at their tech support for wasting a total of 1-1/2 hrs of my time on the phone, yesterday and today combined, and then today telling me to please not call back with any more complaints until I hear form another division of their fine service. I don't want to deal with them anymore on the phone for anything.

Any suggestions on where to get a new modem?
And is there a better choice than the expiring Motorola junk I have now??
Please, and Thank you!

Hi John;
I would check BestBuy. I use Verizon (my phone company) for DSL. So far it has been o.k. but tech support leaves a LOT to be desired. My DSL modem is a WESTEL with wireless option.

Ours is only compatible with the service and software provided through the sevice. We can't get a different brand. That was we were told anyway, but the software does only have three models listed and all are the same brand.

might check www.tigerdirect.com

they usually have good prices and the PCs I have bought from them work fine.
D-Link and Linksys are well known names in the modem/router world for home systems.
of course if you want top of the line, full blown internet world go with CISCO

Call them back one more time and ask if a Westell VersaLink 327W is
compatible with their system. If so, it's yours.

This one is a DSL modem and also a wireless router.

Charlie,..I can't stand to dial the number again. The combination of talking to an automated voice asking me stupid questions, then talking to people who can't seem to help has about blown me over the edge tonight.:at-wits-end:
It was a bad day at work, and they about caused me to start drinking again.
I did ask them if they thought it might be cheaper for me to switch to cable than buy another modem.Didn't seem to faze them.
Thanks for the offer, i have no clue if your unit would work for me or not...

If you think it will work for me, shoot me a price and we'll talk.:)

Johnny,
No matter what modem you get, you will have to call them so they can authorize the specific modem in their system. I know this because we went through the same thing. We went to Best Buy and bought an ATT 2Wire Gateway. It is both wired and wireless. You can find cheaper, but the first one worked well for 2-3 years. Drop us a PM if you have furthur questions. You also might want to call ATT and see what they can offer you if you stay with them and not go with Bright House or Comcast (whichever one is in your area).

Thanks, Mike. I would have to call them again? oh God.
I may try another modem (not one from them) and maybe one more call to set it up, but anymore of their _ _ _ _ and I will switch to cable if it looks
like a better alternative. We need tv anyway, the digital switch and a converter box for our antennae has left us with slim pickin's on the tube!

I would call AT&T back and ask for a free or reduced price one. If/when they say they can't do that, ask to be transfered so you can cancel your service. You will usually be tranfered to a manager who "can" make a deal.

Thanks, Richard. I might try that, free is very good!
And i pay 30.00 monthly..why shouldn't they try to help if they want to retain my business.
.. but i may have to wait a couple days to cool off. I'm pretty hot with them right now.

sometimes, It is better to call when your frustrated. I seem to remember all the tiny little issues when I'm frustrated, and makes the list of 'why I should switch' much longer.
I had Comcast for a while, and rate hike after rate hike it was cheaper for me to sign up for Dish, and get DSL with the phone company. People told me I would be upset with the slowness of the DSL. but I honestly don't see any difference.

Well, if it will work on your system, it's yours. You can cover the postage.
The Westel is used by Verizon, but I'm sure it will work on other systems, too.

As for cable (that's what I do) you can usually get into some sort of bundle
with unlimited phone, high speed internet (12-20Mbit) and a digital cable
package for somewhere around $99 to $120 a month, depending on the company.
Things like high definition or a DVR can bump that up though. And once the cable
is in the house, other TV's can plug in without using a box (which they charge for)
but might get less content. Save the box for the main room, and just plug the
other tv's in directly.

Definately cool off a bit... Then when you call back ask for "customer retention"... Almost ALL of the providers have that department.. Let them know the grief that you had gotten from the regular department.

ALSO - go to dslreports.com and see what other options and costs you have in either DSL or cable. Do this BEFORE you call back. You may be surprised at the options you have.

Charlie, PM sent, Thanks!
Dean, thanks for the advise. I'll check the link you show, thank you!

(and thanks to everyone for letting me share my frustration).

Hey John,
I have a brand new DSL with wireless modem, never used. It was for Qwest, but it may work. They sent my Father-in-law 2 and never picked this one up. You can have it.

I can't get DSL where I am, only cable, which is fine.
