the Carb-i-tool wheel cutters here in the United States? I am trying to come up with a way to make my own wooden wheels rather than buy them, especially the 1.5", 2" and 2.375" wheel or in that neighbor hood.

I know I can order a set thru Carb-i-tool in Australia, but I am looking for some that are available in the US.

Thanks a bunch

Rob,

Couldn't you use the hole saws at Harbor Freight?? They have a set that is 1-3", I believe for, like, $10???

Ed, I could, but that would give me a flat, unfinished look to the wheels, and I would prefer to get the finished rounded look like the Carbi-tool does. I am presently using my circle cutters to make wheels, but want something a little different.

Alton, I have to say that I find your signature line and your avatar conflicting somewhat. Don't get me wrong, I still think you look cute in the picture.

Isn't this a turning forum? Couldn't you cut them out on with your circle cutter and then detail them on the lathe?

Yes, I could do this, but I am looking on making several HUNDRED of the wheels for some train sets, pull-a-long toys and such. I can buy them rady made, but using the wheel cutters would be quicker than turning each one and i could use scrap wood. ALso, I woud have face-grain outside instead of end grain which I think I would like better.

If I was just going to make a few, then I would turn them.

"Would a rosette cutter do the same thing?"

It is possible that a rosette cutter would do, but it would be best to have adrilled center hole so you could reverse easily. I am looking at some of the rosette cutter profiles now.

Wheels

I make my own wood wheel usings a :circle cutter, forstner bits and a router.

Hey Rob,
I have a sears circle cutter that i put in my drill press, just adjust it to whatever size you want. It iwll leave a v shape on the outer edge. If you are using 3/4 inch thich stock, just set your drill press to drill half way through the wood, then turn it over and drill from the other side, this will leave the v ridge in the center of the wheel. It works real good and not that expensive either. They will a long time. If you dont want the ridge just put it them on the lathe and cut it off. Hope this helps.
