I have a Shop Fox W1685 1-1/2 HP 1280 CFM Dust Collector that works very well. Problem is the stock dust filter bag doesn't work very well (filters only 30 micron).

I replaced it with this:

Grizzly G5556 0.3 Micron Dust Bag - Large Bag for G1028Z, G1029 & G1030

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...6RB5OK&coliid=IG9P1D6AZ916V&v=glance&n=228013

While this solved my problem with filtration, my CFM suffered a lot. I probably am getting only half the rated CFM now (about 640 CFM from original 1280 CFM). I understand why this is happening but...

Do you know of or can recommend another bag that will do both...filter below 5 microns and still give me a descent CFM?

BTW, I can't afford the canisters so they are out of the question.

Thank you,

It seems to me that in order to work at a finer level it is going to be a finer mesh, a finer mesh is going to restrict air flow. To keep the same air flow you need more surface area through one of to methods- larger bags is you can find a way to modify the DC to hold them, or a canister. Canisters work because the pleated filter area provides much more surface area than a bag of the same size can.

I'm not familiar with the DC you mentioned but if has a top filter bag you may be able to get a bigger bag and extend the holder for it. The diameter of the opening with a bigger bag may be a problem but should be easy to trim and sew it to a smaller diameter.

Dario, Try Wynn Enviromental. < www.WynnEnv.com>He has all types of filters that you can adapt to your dust collector. Let me know if he has what you need. Joe

A pleated filter is a good idea, something else (somewhat more trouble) would be to use your coarser bag, and put the DC in a box and force the air to exit through a high quality (pleated) furnace filter. The filters are cheap, and it would give the air a chance to slow down and some of the dust to settle down before it hit the filter(s)

Alternatively, put the DC outside, or make a vent to outside instead of "bagging" it...

Thank you guys!

Joe, I did a quick look at their site. Prices look very reasonable but I am not sure yet what my best option will be. I will contact them and inquire.

Thanks!!!

You can also try www.americanfilterfabric to have them make you a custom, oversized, filter bag. I plan on eventually doing this with my DC.

Cheers,
Draken

Dario,

PSI has some excellent 1 micron bags. I changed mine out to these and it made a big difference. No dust--Better vacuum. Go to their site and search for "dust collector bags".
