I have done fridge work for years. My vaccum pump is an old refridgerator compressor. They both pump and suck. The low side in most freezers are under a good vaccume when running. I can get down to 27"Hg real easy. The worst problem with this type of pump is oil splatter. You really need to devise a way to catch the oil that blows out the high side discharge when pumping heavy air. As the vaccume builds, the oil discharge quits or slows way down. You will need from time to time to replace the lost oil or the pump will lock up. Find an old fridge or freezer thqt is a throw away and you have a useable vaccume pump for free.
