I want to make a pen for a blacksmith. Right now I am thinking of attempting a cast with coal dust and aluminum or brass shavings. The aluminum is metal, but is soft enough to turn. I was also toying with the idea of gluing a logo or small picture to the tube and casting a clear blank.

Any other ideas?

I like the coal dust idea. as for the logo or picture, What does the black smith specialize in? If (for example) he makes horseshoes them mabey put a horseshoe on it. or does he have a buesiness logo? i dunno just a couple ideas. Sounds like a cool pen Please post it i wanna see it.

The blacksmith here in alabama at Tannehill state park would make the kids old fashioned nails and they were good souviners, i was lucky to get one then the next week he died way too early, he made horshoes also and other nick nacks

Here is the horseshow inlay blank from kalenshaan

Is he a BLACKSMITH or FARRIER ???

Just a note: All farriers are blacksmiths but not all blacksmiths are farriers...
Farrier is a type of blacksmith with a focus on shoeing horses, old timers made their own shoes and doctored hoofs.

As far as the blank goes I think a coal cast in resin with metal shavings (alum. and or brass) would be nice

He is a blacksmith. I think I am going to go with the coal dust and some brass shavings. Now I just have to find some brass. Maybe I will take a file to some screws I am never going to use.

If you have a Lowes or Home Depot near you go to the key making dept and see if they will give you some of the shaving from the keys for you brass. Or a locksmith.

For brass shaving go find where they make keys, have e clean out the bin. They will give you all they brass shaving you will ever need. If you are not close to one I can send you some.

You can buy miniature tools for model railroads. I got some on EBay, and they're small enough to use in pen making, I think. Perhaps cast a tiny coal shovel?

A slightly different twist from casting, but I've seen a few pens here made from re-bar. What about an old railroad spike? The head "sort of" looks like an anvil ...

Check out the shavings container at key making machines.
Do a good turn daily!
