I have been seeing this growing on a tree down the road from me.The black area has been there about 2 years. Then this year it gets these big white growths showing up almost overnight.Looks like some sort of mushroom.Could this be the start of something good? Not sure what kind of tree it is.Maybe someone can tell from the bark.May be some sort of hickory or walnut but not sure.

Don't get alarmed, Ron . . . but it looks like the start of those giant worms from the movie Tremors. Either that . . . or it's the pod people coming to your neighborhood.

Ronald Have turned an aspen poplar shelf fungus , but not sure I`d want to see the inside of something that looks like my guts spilling out . The shelf fungus was a bit stringy , but turnable with sharp tools . As diameter got close I used CA liberally , and ultimately finished with 80 grit solution . Because the grain in the fungus is so fine , a blowout was easily fixed with an invisible patch . Nice dark brown colour . Wayne

Perhaps I need some more coffee - or less!

Wow that is some imagination you have there. Now every time I look at it that is what I see.Man I bet you can see some really wierd stuff in the clouds.:D:D:D

I would leave the fungus alone and see what kind of spalting you get from it. Leave it be for as long as the tree is living - assuming it is still alive. Be very careful of the spores that come from that thing when it dries out. You just never know what alien species may be using that tree to invade the earth - or your lungs! [:p]
