I was fortunate enough to win a fantastic Jichimu blank from Dave Lee (Rarest wood).

Now I have a wonderful, but difficult decision. What kit should I use? I am leaning toward one of the higher end CSUSA kits, but would like input from the forum.

Please let me know your ideas (no, not to send you the blank!! :)) as to what kit would best complement this incredible wood.

TIA,

I would use it for a nice kit with the largest diameter you like to use. That way you maximize the use of the wood.

I kind of have the opposite issue right now. I have a Jr. Emperor (my first) but I can't decide which material to use. Anyway, maybe I should start a thread asking for suggestions. hum...

Good luck on our decision.

I find myself leaning toward fountain pens for unique woods. So I would probably go with the Rhodium / 22K Gold Statesman Fountain pen from CSUSA.

Interesting thoughts, particularly the closed end idea.

Although I have never used it, I find myself looking at the Lotus kit.

Yes, definitely a fountain pen.

sounds like you're heading in the right direction. my vote would be towards a higher end fountain.

Statesman/Emperor/Lotus in 22k/Rhodium

Good luck with your choice. please post photo's of the winner!

I've tried a Statesman and an Imperial. Of the two, the imperial worked the best. I'm not sure how to explain this, but Jichimu seems to loom large and despite very minimal curves, the Statesman looks a bit too fat. The imperial looks perfect -- the intended buyer (who wants a matched pair) was also delighted.

If you cut a small piece lengthwise, you could make an OUTSTANDING slimline.
ONE OF A KIND!!!!

Send me the waste.

Don't tempt him, Neil!!

The chance of failure escalates as we delve into the unknown. We want Cav to end up with a great pen, not a bunch of pieces that don't fit together.

No offense, Cav - I thought about this idea earlier today and decided I wouldn't do it, why curse you with the thought!!!

Cav, I did an Emperor 22K f/p in the chicken feather blank I got from David and it was beautiful but I think a Lotus or a Statesman closed end would be a knock out.

Neil,

Would that I were nimble enough of mind to do that! Believe me, if I ever get enough nerve to try something like that, there would be LOTS of practice on $1.00 blanks.

I discovered that I don't watch football and look online as well as I thought I did.

I meant the Imperial rather than the Lotus. I find the Imperial a less "busy" kit than the Lotus.

I like the Emperor . Maybe even the Limited Edition . What ever you want to do , keep it high end . I'm anxious to see this one .

I think it depends on the quality of the wood. I would prepare to make either a Statesman or Gent and make your final decision after turning and finishing. If you are lucky enough to get an exhibition grade piece, you don't want to ruin the affect by overwhelming it with putrid bling. But, if you get a much plainer piece, use the Statesman which is as much bling as I can tolerate.
