A person came up to me at the Chicago show and handed me these. He wants me to make them into pens for him. He bought them at an auction and thought they were pens he was buying but they are not. I don't know what they are or what they are made of. They sure look like gold or gold plated. Each one telescopes, as you see the one on the bottom is not pulled out, the other two are. On the end of each one is a plastic piece that looks like a dovetail. If you pull on the dovetail, it pulls out about an inch and springs back into place like it is some sort of holder for something. I do not know what the whitish looking material is on two of them, they really look like Abalone. I have yet to figure out how to disassemble them.

I did not read them all, but the biggest one has an engraving on it. It says

Jul US King Optical CO
Pat Nov 28 1882
Pat Mar 12 1889

My guess is that they are handles for holding opera glasses.

I'd jump at the chance to convert one into a pen.

Just a shot in the dark.. I'd guess they are handles for reading glasses. Magnifying glasses...

My Grandmother had something like looked like that, but hers was not as ornate.

I could be totally off, so don't go by me. Hopefully someone else knows more about them.

Edit: sorry double post. I'm with Steven.

Awesome, thanks guys, the one on the ebay page is exactly the same as the one I have without the maybe abalone top section.

You got it Steve...I will send you one of them, but you have to sell the pens back to the person at a reasonable price is all.

Wow!!! Cool and thanks Jeff. Before you send it....please find out if they have any value and need to be insured. If I can make something, then I would send it back to you. You can tell your client to make a donation to the site instead of paying me.

Post man just dropped off the parcel  LOL Jeff, I LOVE the way you pack a box!!!! Absolute best 'padding' you can get!!!:wink: Thanks!!

I'm gonna do some serious thunking and mulling over before I tackle the glasses handle but I have some ideas drifting around in my skull.

Jeff, please check your email.

.....and thanks again for the 'padding'
