I was helping Nolan and our local Woodcraft and that was a question I was asked as I was setting up the burls that were going on sale as part of the Woodcraft anniversary sale this month. So to answer that question Nolan, Jay, and I made this out of two equal sized burls:

That is not everything the burl offered up. It is just all that would fit on the board which is 16.5" wide by 38" tall.

Here's a shot to make you drool:

Greg,
That is a great visual tool. I would not have thought that so much could be gotten from one burl. How big was the burl? I guess that I am going to have to come to Dublin and if I get that far I guess Pleasanton to see the big mustard.

Cindy, I *knew* someone would ask and meant to measure it but forgot before delivering it. We tried to get two burls the same size so it is about 15" by 12" by 5".

Darci, I know you guys don't have a band saw yet but I also know you have friends who do have them and would be happy to help you cut up your burls.

Frank, we picked a few varieties of the burls available from Nolan: Red Mallee, Brown Mallee, New Mallee, and Red Gum (in the blue box you can just barely see).

I have a few pretty decent sized burls in cherry and oak that were given to me (I gave him a couple pens) ... my question ...

Is it better to cut them up to help in the drying process or should I let them dry awhile the way they are first. I have cut a few pieces off and placed them in brown bags but not sure if I should continue.
????

Unhh...I'm jealous. I can't get down to Pleasanton until the end of March, first of April. I have family in San Leandro and I always make a trip over the hill to the WoodCrack store.

I'm liking the 20% off deal though.

Just drive a little east and come pick out some yourself....

Lenny depending on the size of the burl it could take multiple years to get the entire burl to equalize to the current MC (5-10 if the burl is big enough) Cut it and dry it slow especially if it is a specie that is prone to cracking.

If you are coming to WoodCraft in Dublin then you are only 7 minutes from my house in Pleasanton.

Where are you coming from?

Nice use of material Greg, well thought out cutting.

Nolan did all the cutting. I just did the gluing and labeling.
