What epoxy do you use?

Hi John, I use JB Weld Clearweld 5 minute, just because it is what they carry in my local Menards. I think it is pretty stinky when it is mixed. I especially notice the stink when I add a drop of Acrylic craft paint to color it for resin blanks. Other than the smell, it has served me quite well. - Dave

So I had the same issue with JB Weld as Dave, the fumes were noxious while it cured and sometimes could even smell it for a few days in various projects. (not always a pen maker)

I switched to the Gorilla Glue 5 minute epoxy and the stink is NOTHING compared to JB Weld. I've not one clue if there is a difference in shear strength between the two glues but GG has worked wonderfully for me for over a year. I've not noticed a difference in viscosity, mix time or anything else between the two glues. Actually, I don't think the GG epoxy has a stink but it does smell like a glue if that makes sense. All I know is my family does not complain about epoxy smell when I use it.

I have not tried dropping any paint into the epoxy so I can't comment on that. I probably should try it though.

I purchase mine at my local Menards too. I think Home Depot & Ace Hardware also carry it.

To be clear, I use CA glue on tubes too and it depends on what I'm doing. If it's something short like a sierra tube then I usually go with my CA glue. If it's a particularily long tube or I have a bunch of tubes to glue at once (think several pens) then I just mix up epoxy and go with that. I also use epoxy on bottle stoppers.
 
I did five tubes so the accumulative effect could have been a part. When using CA as a finish, I turn on the Shop Vac to draw fumes away from the lathe area. I have used Devcon Two Ton epoxy on the past. Has a 30 minute work time so one could do a few blanks and tubes at once.

I've used DEVCON but ARALDYTE slow setting ( 2 hour working time ) is excellent and my go to selection. Allows me to mix well and take my time in assembly. Also allows the stuff to penetrate the fibres well

Where did you get it? I'm never in a hurry to turn blanks. I'll glue the tubes one day and turn the next day.
